how many times can we chop and change players in this format of the game?
Its not the personnel alone, its the fact we dont know how to play the format.
If the likes of Anderson, Swann, Broad, Prior, Cook, Trott and Pietersen can perform well at Test level they should be able to do it in a fifty over format. Those players are the core of our successful test team. Unfortunately they are far too accustomed to the longer form of the game.
Weve come to the stage where the management should stick with these players, as they do in tests, until they get it right.
The likes of Bopara, Kieswetter, Patel and even Bresnan in ODI's should be excluded.

cook still doesn't convince me he's an ODI player, Prior certainly isn't and Anderson should only be used in certain conditions.
Going Forward we need to be looking at the following imo
1&2 - Cook, Keiswetter, Hales or Davies
3 - Trott or James Taylor
4 - Pietersen
5 - Morgan
6 - Bairstow, Stokes or Buttler
7 - Patel or Scott Borthwick (desperatly need to find another allrounder may even see Luke Wright come back in)
8 - Bresnan
9 - Broad
10 - Swann
11 - Dernbach, Finn or Anderson
my next team would be
1. Hales
2. Davies
3. Taylor
4. Pietersen
5. Morgan (capt)
6. Bairstow
7. Patel

it won't happen as too many people believe test cricketers make odi players but they don't.

I don't see why Prior and most other of the test players can't make the transition. Prior isnt a pinch hitter though and that's how he was mainly deployed in ODIs. He scores quickly, has a lot of experience and is easily good enough to be at 6 or 7
With regards to the bowlers, if you can bowl with control in a test match you should be able to in ODIs. I think we have too much of an obsession with so called specialists in England and the specialists are very rarely special.

dont understand why you see this as problem. surely if we have a succesful [#1 in the world] test team who are accustomed to the longer form of the game then keep it that way, keep them succesful rather than tinkering with them till eventuallty they cant play either form well?
play an entirely different team except those who really can excell in both - pietersen, swann possibly morgan, prior, bresnan and one anchor ing batsma - one of trott, cook or bell.
especially a good idea considering the amount of cricke they have to play and also we have to watch. an extra rest for the players and more interest for us - it gets very tedious watching the same 13 players play all year round

agreed, and our best players do. the problem as i see it is we try to make too many players fit into both formats when its not conducive to either the teams performance nor the players career.
it benefits neither the test side nor the one day side to try and shoe horn too many big hitting players into the test side for example, or vice versa with slow batting players.
the best of either can make it in either formats but not all players are cut out for it, nor should they be forced too, not when we have such a wide pool of players available and such a hectic schedule of endless cricket.

Pietersen gets away with murder IMO, I'm all for dropping the likes of Bell, Bopara and potentially even Kieswetter, but he has barely made a score for 2 years in ODI's. Prior is a prime example of an excellent test match player who has been punished for continual poor ODI performances and KP should be looking over his shoulder as much as Bell and Bopara.
Hales, Taylor, Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow are the future, wouldn't mind seeing a recall for Davies either as Kieswetter is inconsistent with bat and gloves - Davies has a far better technique and bats up the order in all forms of the game for Surrey.
I think we are OK bowling wise once Broad and Anderson return to the pool, Finn continues to improve in the limited overs form and Bresnan is steady enough. Meaker has potential but Dernbach needs to learn a stock ball that isn't bowled at 65mph, he's very easy to hit once you get used to him. Someone like Borthwick or Briggs needs a decent run as Patel isn't consistent enough to be a regular 2nd spinner.

I'd give him another series but it's unfair for others to be castigated when he's done nothing of note for 2 years. You have a lad in Trott who averages over 50 yet gets more stick than someone who barely averages 20 in recent times.
