There might just be 1000 left but the bit about ”still had online orders to process” is a load of balls. The online purchasing system is a live system and When u hit buy on your computer it immediately registers as a sold ticket in ticket office. If it didn’t they wouldn’t know how many or even wether they had any tickets left for sale at tills.

There's a possibility this could be true you know. Have you ever noticed how they take tickets offline when they're close to being sold out but not actually sold out? You can typically get the last lot from the ticket office direct but not online.
The systems must not be linked. Although you would have thought that they would have a limit to the amount the online system could sell. It would make sense.
