34 Years Ago Today…

Cracking day. I was 8 but remember it all vividly from the drive down, parking up, walking round the ground, the Kop End (we were in South Stand), the match itself, the feeling afterwards and I can’t remember much about the drive home so I guess I must’ve fallen asleep.

Proper blew my mind that cup run did.

I got a couple of tickets the day before the match through work having queued overnight at Roker and failed to get one. My wifes uncle picked up the tickets in Sheffield for me as he lived there. We agreed to meet at Sheffield Cathedral - i have no idea why but he must have thought it was a good spot. Me and me mate drove up from London but couldn't get close to the cathedral, so we dumped the car (in those days you could do this without fear of cameras etc) and ran. I'd only met him once before and I wasn't sure he'd recognise me. This wasn't helped by the fact we had our faces painted (my missus did charity fete's etc and was an expert - The old badge, red and white down the face, black ship on our foreheads, blue background lol) as I approached him on the steps of the cathedral he just handed the tickets over without a word - he looked totally shocked lol. Got to the ground with not much time to spare and only then realised that we were in with the Norwich fans. Sh*t. As it happens they were good as gold but it did feel like we were really taking the piss. Had an absolutely perfect view of the goal though as we were sat behind the cross. So much better to have been in with the Sunderland fans but at least we were there. Getting a ticket for the final was easy peasy lol. My first was born a week or so after the final. He was always going to be called after his Grandad but my wife agreed we could also name him after the winning goalscorer in the event that we won so long as it wasn't Anton (Rogan)
Anton Rogan was an intelligent footballer however he was so slow

The whole of the Sunderland singing along to Twist and Shout by The Beatles.

About 75% of our support apparently mortal.

I got the bus down with the Stanhope lads, what a day man.

I can still visualise the winning goal in my minds eye to this day. Attacking the Leppings Lane end, away from us; just after the half hour, David Rush found Brian Atkinson who crossed for John Byrne to stoop and head home. Our end erupted as it went in. Happy, happy days

I found it emotional as well.

Don't remember the goal, but was in the Kop and the fans whistling for the ref to end it, was so loud it actually hurt my ears.
I sat on the kop in 2008 SW v Fulham in the cup and the stand shook. Imagine what it was like when Byrne scored!!!
