“Everyone’s cup final” myth

Never bought into this. However it’s apparent there’s teams in this league who look at their fixture against us as their cup final and raise their game for that one match. Cheltenham and Wimbledon this week alone. I appreciate we’ve been poor and it’s up to us to be putting teams like that away if we’re serious about getting out of this league. There’s not a mission however they should be where they are going on the work rate, commitment and effort when up against us.

It’s not a myth. Teams undoubtedly raise their game against us because they are desperate to beat Sunderland. Every shit team that beats us usually loses and it gets hammered the game after because they revert to being shit but with added fatigue from trying their hardest to beat us. It’s not even up for debate tbh.

100% agree, Wimbledon played better football than us and created more chances. We were abysmal and could even do the basics, as is often the case. It is a myth that we are a footballing side, more often than not we are terrible.

Absolute myth.

Teams in these divisions have had to work their socks off to get where they are.

It's all about work ethic.

Southampton have had their 'cup final' against Man Utd today, and Spurs in midweek, and the list goes on. Why? because they work themselves so hard covering the ground and put a full press on so called 'bigger' teams.

If you apply the 'cup final' logic, we should have our cup final every week, because we are desperate to get back up a division...

Agree for the most part. But what I’m saying is there’s teams who have/are sitting on or near the bottom of the league, 3/4 of the way through the season now. Who’ve not won in weeks or months. Then you watch the sheer effort and commitment of them against us and you have to wonder why they are where they are if they’re playing like that every week. And if they’re not, then why is it they suddenly lift themselves against us?

Such a shite boring excuse that gets repeatedly peddled on here. It's a myth as well.

I've never seen Man City or Liverpool fans moaning about Norwich raising their game against them. Maybe we're just not good enough?

This unfortunately.

Dire. Incapable of carving out a clear cut goal-scoring opportunity in 95 minutes against Wimbledon tells us all we need to know. Added to that the shocking incompetence of Neil, Cirkin, Stewart and Wright makes us a longshot for the play offs as it stands.

What about similar sized clubs in Sheff Wed and Portsmouth. Do smaller clubs raise their level against them as well?

Comparing Man City and Liverpool to Sunderland

Its not a "Myth"...
Players raise their game at SOL and at Hillsborough down in this division
I mean Liverpool Man Utd etc...don't give a flyer
But Cheltenham, Fleetwood, accrington?...Course they do....They trot out into history, don't tell me it doesn't make a difference...cos it does.
I'll be bluntly honest, first game I looked for down here was Sunderland
Not blowing smoke up yer arses but it was...I dare say a few of you saw Wednesday as the stand out
so look at it as a player ...SOL, Hillsborough...or Woking?...No disrespect, but who you gonna look forward to?..who are you going to be up for it against

simple human nature

Possibly, I don’t know. Wouldn’t be surprised though. What I’m saying is that I never bought into it, and still don’t really. However having watched the effort, commitment and organisation put in by some opposition lately against us. Then you look at their weeks/months of bad results prior and their league position. My observation is that if they played like that every week there’s no way they’d be in the position they’re in.

You say you've never bought into it then go on to say that it is correct ?

There’s also an element of playing to your strengths and the fact that the majority of these sides’ strengths happen to be manhandling hoofball which also happens to be our cryptonite.
