‘Stevie G’

He said the other week on the overlap that his family are settled in Liverpool (more likely some leafy village in Chesire) again and that he wanted a job over here. I can see why he'd want Burnley, as it'll only be an hour's drive from home or whatever.

I can't see him lasting the season though if he does get the job.

Think you mean ‘moot’.

Steve McManaman got into Madrid’s team. Alex Song got into Barca’s. Is Gerrard inferior to those two?
He was never world class.
If “World Class” means anything, it’s that a player would walk into any side in world football. Gerrard 100% could’ve done that.
No.

Parker is a decent manager. They must be getting ready to spend the cash if they are getting Gerrard.

From players I've seen in my lifetime, I'd say only Zinedine Zidane was better in his position. Not everyone will agree with that, but surely most will agree that Gerrard was top drawer.

Top drawer player yes, was he world class which is a completely different level? Was he Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zidane, Maradona, Pele level? No. That's world class for me.

World class has to be judged on players in the same position from the same era.

Was he as good as Zidane. No. Was he the second best in the world in that position at that time. Quite possibly. That for me would still constitute world class

That's a canny high bar definition of world class. Those players were all the best player in the world at the time of the height of their powers. Gerrard wasn't at that level.

I'd say world class is "would a player get into the best team in the world?", the team that won the world cup, or the European cup, or any of the top 5 leagues in the world. Gerrard was at that level.
Don't be stupid, would not have got into madrids team or barcelona so your argument is mute.
Wasn't world class but a very good premier player
Of course he would have. There were worse players in both teams when he was playing, and Liverpool was better than both of those teams when he was at his peak.

Agree, Gerrard was a very good player but fell short of being World class. Our World cup winning team had 3 World class players, Charlton, Moore and Banks and the last British World class player was Best. Hoddle had World class skills but didn't achieve enough to be labelled World class.

It's always debatable with so many 'World Class' players over time. But in 2004 Pele and FIFA selected 100 current and past players and StevieG didn't make that list.

Mind you, neither did Bobby Moore 😱

10 British players did though. Including 3 Liverpool players.

Kenny Daglish
Roy Keane
George Best
Alan Shearer
Michael Owen
Gary Lineker
Kevin Keegan
Bobby Charlton
Gordon Banks
David Beckham

It's really only personal opinion 🤔

It’s what makes it such a common topic of debate. Everyone has a different definition of ‘world class’. Same with the ‘big club’ debate.
