Redevelopment of Cricket Grounds

Watched a piece on Sky last night about the new era of cricket and it panned around lots of the county grounds. Got me thinking that, unlike football where clubs have gone for soulless budget flatpack stadiums, the county griounds have generally been done up pretty tastefully. When you watch the old footage of games from twenty years ago they look like absolute holes in comparison.

Anyone disagree and wish they were back how they were?

I'm not a huge fan of what they've done at Old Trafford, but they're genuinely tasteful. Having said that I do wish I could have gotten to lords before the spaceship media centre arrived and pitch invasions were allowed.

From a distance it looks like someone stuck a massive plastic cube on the top of a stand and really out of place. Right in front of it, it looks like a massive waste of space. I can't remember if it's one or two floors but it's got really high ceilings and a few people just mill about at the front. Looks like they tried to make it like a club.
 
I went down to Lancashire last season and was pleasantly surprised by The Point. Canny for sheltering under when the rain comes down, as it inevitably does in Manchester. I had a walk around the ground and TBH the rest of the place is a bit of a tip. I'm not surprised they are doing it out.

They need to improve the fish and chip stands.

Went for some bait between innings during Durhams T20 game last season. I'd been looking forward to watching Ross Taylor (it was just after he'd had a couple of great innings). By the time I'd got my food and back to my seat he was out, we were 14-2 after 4 overs and it was game over :evil:

The whole ground is being done up (hopefully, long as the newest appeal is defeated in the House Of Lords), as it's well past it's sell by date.

As it is now The Point looks ridiculous by itself towering over the rest of the ground, but it's the first of three and I have high hopes for the ground whenever the twat from Sainsburys goes away.

I have not been to Durham in a while, how is the development going at the riverside in preparation for the ashes.

Its not really. They have fiulled a bit on between the main stand and the media stand but other than that nothing. Its a question that everyone is asking.

suppose we have till 2013 but I would have thought it would be priority with the biggest match to take place in Durham's history.

Got the impression that's the ground done. They'll obviously bring the big green temporary stand in for the Test too. It's quite good how Durham have the option of removing that cos it makes the ground feel full for the domestic T20s etc.
 
I thought the plan was to make the temp stands permanent. Flood lights added and an extra scoreboard.

No floodlights. The old scoreboard has apparently been sold to somewhere in Scotland once it comes down.

The latest rumour is that the club will do some sort of deal with the builder where they will effectively have a rent back or lease agreement for the stands, in return for them building it.
