Great thread lads,

Im under 40 and under 16 stone but Im still gonna add a few bits aswell.

Having ford Escorts driven around the perimeter at Roker.
Proper Bovril with me 10p mix up.
The minute club shop at roker park.
Sunderland fans nicking a basketball from some black lads near Maine Road, with the black lads calling them 'white bastards' and other stuff.
Roker Rookie 50p in vouchers
Metal fences at Roker for nee reason
That geet big oil rig whih was in Roker Harbour for years, better than watchin the footy when in the Fulwell.
Wincey Willis scoring for Hartlepool in the daft cup.
St James 26th May 1990, getting dropped off at Usworth on the safcsa bus, straight into a taxi full of mags, first time I heard my fatha swear!
Buying cans through the letterbox of the Greyhound at Wemberlee 85 as all pubs were shut.

Great memories, surely somebody on here went to Lisbon in 73?

I have some fantastic memories of the 70s and 80s. Winning at Burnley with nine men, after a skinful of Thwaites. Beating WHU at Roker, I remember Pop Robson scored. Away at Wrexham, clambering over the fence to get on the pitch at the end. Away at Cardiff when all the pubs were closed, we took over Cardiff that day, wading through beercans walking down to the game, only to be overcharged to get in.bastards. Arriving in Stoke only to hear on the radio that the game was called off due to snow, then drinking there until the pubs closed. Away at Cambridge United, Sheffield United home and away when Alex Sabella played for them, (game at home we won 6.1 after he scored for them straight from the kickoff).

All in all too many memories of great people I knew, who are no longer with us. I am still optomistic for the future, we are better placed now than in all of my 50 years of life. OK Sbragia is a bit of a strange one, but we havent seen what effect hes had within the club. Im not worried about financial meltdown, we are better placed than many, Quinn having secured the investment of Short just when needed. If Drumaville do sell up, I say a big thankyou to them for saving the club I love. Quinn and Short have a good relationship by all accounts, so until something happens to change my mind I dont see anything wrong.

I reallise I dont know for sure, and I may be proved wrong, but I get the sneaky feeling Sbragias appointment is short term. I will continue to support the lads where and when I can, and listen to, or watch them on telly/internet. They still make or break my weekend depending on the result. That will never change whether Im at the game or not.

Im not a happy clapper by any means, but if I took the attitude of some on the board I would have to go somewhere quiet and open a vein.

When I read this, I thought I had taken on another USERNAME! Excellent.

Loved the 9 men Vs. Burnley game, despite getting thumped on the way back to me mates car.

I have to say I think we beat Sheff Utd. 6-2. We went top of the 2nd that night as a result.....Meanwhile Forest, managed by Cloughie, were playing a European Cup Semi-final, the same night. I can remember thinking..."That would have been us, if we'd offered him the job"

First game was Versus Man City in 1968. We lost 4-0 at home. Bell, Lee, Summerbee, Doyle and Joe Mercer their manager. I should have quit while I was ahead and would never have had "It's the Hope, I can't stand" life that followed. But you just know its all been worthwhile....Gerrin, top thread!:-D

John Cairns. Mad as a hatter and a right pisshead. But a genuinely nice bloke.

Had a good chat with him at Cambridge in 1992.

Yep thats him.

I went to Charlton in 76, I think Mel scored 2 that day, went down on the train, then bus to the valley, had a chisel pulled on me by a milwall supporter, legged it very quickly, after the game the cockney bastards came charging down the street kicking the fuck out of the last few to get on the buses, first day I met Sammy, he got a right pasting that day

We were standing in the Kippaxe for that one, just like in 1973! Tough place, like. I'm sure Mel bagged one that night. I remember a bit of argy-bargy on the way back to the coaches. I got separated from me mates and a couple of Citeh goblins thought they'd try to give stubber a smacking. :-D

We were in their end so our own fault I suppose. One of our party lit up a massive cigar and that was it. Riled them no end it did. We had to be rescued by a crew of bobbies who dragged us out and dumped us in with our own crew. Made our way back to the coach covered in blood and snots and within two minutes our bus was attacked by waves of Orcs. Windows out the lot.

I loved it at Roker before the teams came out and the buzz of the crowd became a roar.

Now they drown it all out with music until kick off, the bastards. This annoys me intensely and is honestly one of the reasons I don't go as much as I used to.

Half of the point of going to a football match is to experience the atmosphere. If this is drowned out, so is half the reason for going.

Spot on marra.

Can I just add travelling through to St James for the Blyth Spartans match. Me and my brother went with a mag mate who had got tickets for The Leazes. Nothing but neanderthals singing "We all piss in a red and white pot". Whilst me and my bro looking the other way pointing and our mate threatened to blow our cover
Back on the train at Central the whole train erupted with Sunderland songs and we were in our element. However our "mate" fucked off and we didn't see him till we got off at Boldon Colliery

He'd gone by that time, if its the game some of us are on about, 1977ish? The likes of Mel Holden, Pop Robson and co would have scored.

I think Rowell scored. I remember the 6 against West ham off the top of my head. It was Rowell 2, Holden 2, Kerr and Bob Lee. Kerr's was a cracker of the underside of the bar.

Wasn't it something to do with the Mags playing at home the same day and at the time you couldn't play/charge on a Sunday. So in somebodys wisdom the match was played on the Friday. - No proof just something in the back of my mind.

I remember a Sunday match at Roker against Man City, paid for the teamsheet and got in free, due to the Victorian Sunday trading laws.

So did I. Coincidentally i'm sure we played Orient away in the league that night and Gary Rowell missed his only penalty for us in a 1-1 draw.

He did and it was disallowed for what looked like nowt. Micey place Man City but then again it was Moss Side.

Really early "goal", given offside, even though the ball was pulled back from the byline? I've been to City a few times so I may have games mixed up.

You're right Marra, what a dangerous place that was. I've had even more trouble at Spurs mind.

The Blue House at Everton. Shut for f***ing months after we had been in there. Everything went up, swinging from the lights, tables ganning out the window towards the Everton fans walking by.

Middlesbrough are clueless. We played them midweek circa 1990 or so at home and their lads piled off their train at Seaham thinking it was Seaburn. They had a canny walk.
I was on the next train after that lot, and we passed them on the train on the way up to Sunderland, they were all walking up the road, just past the Island club at Seaham

In the Roker v the mags, we drew 1-1. Lots of our boys in the Roker Peter Withe scored for them before half time, I got ejected, started to walk round to the fulwell, chased by half a dozen mags, got to the turnstile, bloke asked for £2 and told me to jump over the top. f***ing copper grabbed me at the other side and asked how I had got in, explained I had paid, "In an all ticket match?" f***ing smarmy , I quickly changed my story to ticket, he marched me back to the turnstyle and the lad said yep he gave a ticket.

So was in the Roker first half and saw the second half from the fulwell. Roy Greenwood equaliser i think????

Toilet rolls

I remember walking to RP cos there was a bus strike (Chesterfield in the cup 75 IIRC) - 10 miles return trip for a little legged 9 year old . It was safe to do it in them days:cry:

It was at last half an hour. ;)

Cant remember the year but one year we were playing at brum 2 saturdays running, first league 2nd cup, as was the way at the time there were about twice as many for the cup game.... anyway 1st saturday we went to this pub and it was mental, sunderland goin beserk dancing on pool tables etc, great time, so the following saturday we directed our whole bus to this pub only to find it boarded up and an escort waiting to take us straight to the ground, we were popular like...
