Southampton could argue along the lines of force majeure as the final game changed. However, they would have to satisfy the criteria that it was external, unforseable, and unavoidable.

I expect they would lose, as they could have avoided it by not cheating, but it won't be that clean cut.

I might be reading this wrong but from the owner's quote it comes across as if they were waiting to see what division they would be playing in before triggering the extension, and probably wouldn't have if they had gone up-

"We had to initiate the [one year] option up to five days after the last game of the season, and we were out of the five days when our final got cancelled."

If that's the case then Stewart owes them nothing, not that I think he does anyway tbh. If he signed for Celtic or Rangers assuming either were interested then he'd still be on decent money with a good chance of some domestic silverware and the opportunity to play in Europe. I wouldn't blame him for moving on because regardless of what we think as supporters it is just business, and clubs are quick to let go of players deemed not up to scratch for whatever reason.

Exactly mate, we've been brutal this season with players who brought us up from L1 to the Premier, because it's gone so well for us nothing has really been said about it.

That's football though, sadly there isn't much room for sentiment at the sharp end, even though for fans it's a very sentimental game, it's all about history and memories and family/friends.

Of course he is with 4 competitions to compete in next season. Anybody with his height and touch you can bring on with 20 mins left to play if your chasing the game. We could literally sign a similar player for a transfer fee and his wages could be double his. It's a no brainer to bring him back imo as his style of play is a rarity anyway but you would only use him as a super sub in the big games.

His touch is adequate in the pub league maybe
Even when fit he was by no means s regular starter for Soton
Too many hung up on his glory days with us in pub league extraordinaire div 1
Bringing ex players back rarely works out
Leave him where he is best suited
 
In all honesty, with his injury record he has to think about himself. Might not have many contracts left in him. Yeah he could sign an extra year with Southampton, breakdown again at some point and then find himself out of contract next summer with a long term injury and no club willing to rehab him.

It’s shit on Southampton after how long he’s been out for them, but they’re not exactly people you should feel sorry for at the moment. He’s going to the World Cup so his stock will not be as high as it is right now in 12 months time. It’s absolutely the right business decision to try and be a free agent. Let’s not forget the reason this is happening is because Southampton cheated. No need to feel sorry for them.

It's called ambition. A cracking lad and player who is hopefully over his bad luck with injuries. I wish him well. The LND was a favourite of mine and people have short memories.
