SOL expansion

While it's true we have shown ambition off the pitch, they've remained pretty consistent in their sustainability approach to spending.

Servicing a long term loan of £250m on a stadium extension doesn't sound like them.
They have just spent £200M in the last two transfer windows, people probably would have never have imagined that happening either. Spending similar on the clubs main asset, that will go on generating income for north of 50 years doesn't sound too crazy, it's probably 10% of Spurs stadium cost. Making the stadium an attractive, pleasant and comfortable place to be with loads of food, drink and retail offerings will be key no doubt. I think some of our new/interim management team have referenced how big a deal going to a sports game is in the states and that's the vibe/monetisation they will be going for.

Personally I don't know what they're likely to do, but I spent the Huddersfield cup game chatting with the MD of one of the sponsors. He's a lifelong mlf and spends a reasonable amount of time around the club and said there's nobody more ambitious for Safc than Kyril, says he's talked seriously about when we are in Europe not if for 3 or 4 years now, together with the need to have a stadium that is fit for purpose.

Gigs are proving too expensive these days and artists pulling back after post-Covid boom. Take that hasn’t sold out in any area of the ground for next week, it’s not something to hang your stadium expansion plans on.
Gigs are selling better then ever in my experience, but artists prefer doing a residency

We currently bring in under £20m in match day revenue.

Someone suggested taking out a £250m loan at about £30m-£35m+ in repayments over 10 years. I don't see how the sums add up.
Currently as in 2024/25 from 40,000 fans in the Championship but prices went up again 2025/26 and the average increased by over 6,000 so we'll probably break £20m this last season. Prices have gone up again for 2026/27 and I think we'll be well over £25m this next season, possibly breaking £25m given the European games.

IMO, the £250m won't just be building the 2 stands, it's possibly a whole stadium revamp to look at ways to increase the revenue all around the ground.

I'm doubtful they'll be here in 2 years time. So I'm just not going all in on an extension at that cost.

At the very least they're looking to sell shares for investment. I hope it isn't a full sale.
You reckon KLD won't be here in 2 years? Of course he will as he's young and he clearly has visions for the club. If an extension is built, or even proposed then it will also add value to the club when it comes to selling so it's not £250m thrown down the drain. If we stay top half and have decent season selling out and hit high 50k crowds bringing in high match day revenue of more than £40m then that will add even more value to the club.

He's right to a point, but I hope they do their market research before they commit as I have my doubts for how many people exist that are willing to spend these massive sums to watch Sunderland AFC. It's not an affluent city with many high paid jobs. Take Nissan- their blue collar factory is in Sunderland. The white collar technical office is in Canary Wharf.

Unless something drastic has happened since I last sat in a seminar about it, Sunderland has a massive shortage of graduate jobs and well paid jobs compared to other cities
Having the bigger stadium will allow those who are more affluent access to the prawn sandwiches. At the minute there's limited 'prawn' sandwich seats so they're being milked but there's still fans willing to pay good money for it. There will also be plenty of fans willing to pay more than they do now with better access to bars/food/seats that would be a middle ground like the founders.

With the extension, it means that more of the ground can cater for the richer fans and the rest of the stadium can have fair priced tickets. If not then like many other clubs, tickets prices all around will go up and concession areas will be reduced in way to drive up revenue. It's already happened in the last 3 seasons at the SOL and will happen again next season and every season after if demand stays the same.

It’s not just football though

Football is 19 afternoons a year

Concerts another 15

Makes total sense to do it
Surely there's more than concerts that could be accommodated at a 60k SOL that would add extra into the coffers?

There's loads of sections just the odd singles (blue) dotted about. Aye there's a few sections with rows of seats (just been released?) but overall it's just singles (blue) about along with the resales (pink but money already in). I can't be arsed to count but it's less than 1,000 seats left , if not in the 100s? No doubt many of those groups of seats will sell over the next few days.

I think its more likely they sell for huge profit rather than hoy 250m on an extension.

In reality it could be either. At some point they will relinquish ownership, when that is, is all supposition. Maybe extra funding from another source comes onboard, and the extension becomes reality. Maybe the south stand buffer zone agreed recently, was done so it didn’t inhibit a future sale with new owners, who knows.
Everything is guesswork until the owners say differently, however I do think there is a plan to extend which will either happen with our current owners, or plans passed onto any future potential buyers as an option. Obviously I hope it happens under present board.

Spending income on players in an attempt to stay up and retain said income, like we did, isn't exactly the same thing.

You're not looking to sell part of the extension for a profit after a successful season either.

£250m spent on a stadium expansion is only going to be worth it financially if the outlay can be repaid in a reasonable period of time. I can't see any way of current ownership sanction such a move.

Don’t worry about repayment times etc, rest assured that the owners are employing people with much more financing skills than anyone on here to ensure it’s all done without risk.
It’s different now, it’s big business and being done properly.

I'm not worried. I just don't think there's a world where they splash out £250m on stadium improvements.

They're smarter than that.

Yep, demand is so high that bands can pretty much demand fans travel to see them.

I’d love to know what plans and designs they have that’d cost them £250m!

It’s costing Villa less than half of that to effectively rebuild an entire stand and fit it out with trickier infrastructure modifications required.
