Points Needed for Last 16 Spot in Europa League

In season 2025/26:

- 16 pts or more from the 8 group games secured a top 8 spot in the 36 team league - and automatic qualification for the last 16 (knock out stage) of the tournament. 5 wins, 2 defeats and a draw; or 4 wins and 4 draws was enough - though all of the top 8 won at least 5 of their 8 games. Lyon topped the table, with 7 wins, 1 defeat and 21 pts. Competition winners Villa had the same record and finished second in the league on goal difference.

- 9 pts or more *secured a top 24 spot - and a place in the 2 legged play offs for a last 16 spot. So just over 1pt per game was needed (ie Premier League relegation form...).

16 pts may be a bit of a tall order(!) but surely 9 pts. is achievable :?:

(*Though the team that finished 25th also had 9pts, but was eliminated on goal difference.)

It's always been 17 and 10 for the two levels across the CL and EL so far that "guarantees" you get into the top 8/24 out of the limited running of the format to date. 16 and 9 usually sees a few through and a few eliminated on GD. Given the terrible quality in pots 3 and 4, we really should be mopping up 4 wins out of 4 from that, which would see you into the top 24 and the next round at a minimum.

Posted elsewhere but 9 points (with goal difference) got you through to the playoffs last year.

10 points (with goal difference) got you through the year before.

Even with a stinker of a draw where you give us the 2 hardest teams from each pot, we should absolutely be capable of hitting double figure points and getting through to the playoffs.

You're looking at 5 wins from 8 to get through automatically in the top 8. That's probably a stretch too far, but I'd be really disappointed if we couldn't emulate the likes of Forest and Celtic to hit the 3 wins it would take to get to the playoffs.

The two games we play from pot 4 alone should be 6 points straight away.
 
Let’s see how much we strengthen the squad. We know we can’t flog the same key players from the league in 8 EL games midweek as well. It’s easy to say the likes of Mayenda will get more minutes, yes they might but we will need to be careful we can’t food the European games with fringe players it just won’t work, the league cup tells us that year after year !

Hopefully we sign a net 4 or 5 good players in the summer as well will need every single one of them.
 
From 8 games, at least two of them will be against shambolic sides from pot 4. If we can get 10 points in total we’ll make the play off round.

If we make that then we’ve done amazing!

Anything past that then we’re dreaming!

Should really be getting top 8. Pots 3 and 4 are full of trash teams which should be 10 points minimum but really 4 wins from 4. Leaves you needing a win and a draw or two from the remaining 4 games against the better sides. And I'd back us certainly at home to do so.

Errrm Aren't we in pot 3? I'm reluctant to call any team in the competition a walkover. We should treat every game in the comp as if its our last one. Scrap for every point.

I think we may even be in pot 4 ourselves if higher ranking teams end up qualifying.

Seems we're nominally in pot 3 for now, but could change as less then half the teams are confirmed yet.

Because we don’t have any coefficient points at all, due to not participating in Europe. So we get 20% of our national one. And more importantly we can’t draw ourselves or the other English team, ie palace.
