Rooney 2002 - 2005

Kane coming close atm, early Owen perhaos, other than that: no.

Wayne was more magical than them too. More maverick, less clinically efficient.

Weve had a few defenders who have hit equivalent levels imo, but harder to compare. For example, imo Rio Ferdinand should have picked up the ballon d'or ahead of Ronaldo when United last won the Champions League. That team broke all the records defensively and shut out Messi and Barcelona for 180 minitues.
Ashley Cole was genuinely world class too and amongst the very best re defenders.

Rooney was a beast at such a young age, nonchalantly dominating and bullying the best defenders about and running the show. Had he not got injured I've no doubts he'd have won us the Euros in 2004.

Thierry Henry scored 24 goals or more in 5 consecutive seasons 2001/2 - 2005/6 . He is the best Premiership player I have seen
Stats can mislead and at times people focus too much on them. With Henry though, take the goals away, and he was still running games and dominating.

Always remember that move where he was running the clock down away to Madrid. A player at the top of his game, and knew it. Casually putting the after burners on to take the ball the length of the pitch, leaving players for dead.

Edit.

He was unbelievable that night.

Plenty of England nostalgia here for those who like a podcast

I was in a taxi in Mexico City in 2004 and the cab driver described Roone as “El nuevo Pelé”

I really struggle to see England winning this World Cup mind. I think the chance for a major tournament win for the foreseeable future has been and blown.
This squad/cycle/generation peaked in 2022. It was unfortunate we drew France so early on, as I think we’d have beaten all the other teams left in our run (Morocco, Argentina)

Italy in 2021 was the chance to win something. 1-0 up at home and we couldn’t control the game

Agreed with all of that, but England have been very fortunate with kind draws in major tournaments for the large part, which has made their failure to win a major tournament during the last few attempts even more pronounced.

Even this upcoming World Cup they've found themselves on the "easier" side again.

Gascoigne's Rangers years then ?
Already asked and addressed.

But French.
Shearer wasnt any better in those 3 years than at any other time in his career. History will show he scored lots of goals per season when playing for good sides challenging for the league. He only scored 17 in 60 appearances in the league 2004-2006 ( ie when you were werent )
112 goals in 130 games is top class whether in Championship challenging team or not.
Appreciate he is a Mag, however his goalscoring record is outstanding by any metric.
As you mention elsewhere Henry was fantastic. Wouldn’t argue. Truly world class. He was playing in a top class team, with top class players around him. None of which reduces his quality.

Has this debate the other night in the club. Rooney or Gerrard? Rooney all day for me like. Incredible
Probably Rooney just edges it but I loved Steven Gerrard and he carried a team on his shoulders where Rooney was surrounded by brilliant players. Both of them are everything I want in a footballer. Not a thing they couldn’t do technically and on top of that, worked their bollocks off and were as tough as old boots with a nasty streak in them.

Individual seasons given their respective clubs has to go to Andy Johnson or Dean Ashton.

Zamora, Carlton Cole and Theo Walcott deserve special mentions too.

Lastly, Shaun Wright Phillips. Criminally underrated.
Individual season Kevin Phillips 1999/2000, 30 goals in 36 games is in different universe to Johnson or Ashton.

If he’d of been French, Spanish, German, Italian, Brazilian or Argentinian he’d have been the first name on the international team sheet that summer.

No-one comes close to Christiano Ronaldo, apart from Messi. He's over 40 and still single-handedly owning games, but the one I remember most was Ronaldo v Spain in the euro's.

John barnes late 80s at Liverpool was top tier

Hoddle ? Cannot recall sustained over of long period maybe

I bet a lot of man united fans would say Bryan robson comparable / better than Rooney

In fairness a hatrick on your European debut and consistence 8/9/10 out of 10 performances for several years is hard to beat
