Geertruida

He started 17 games this season for us. I know that number was helped by AFCON, but he played a part in 30 games over the season. He could surely expect to start a similar number with us in the Europa League next season.

The problem will be if we get a staring right winger then he ends up behind Hume in the pecking order. He does have the highest pass success rate in the entire team and he has played Champions League football the previous two years, so it's reasonable for him to want to be a starter. I can't quite see him starting for a better team in the Premier League though?

There was only 6 better teams than us when you look at the season, he's a solid pro who is maybe hampered by being so versatile

you may be correct, but it feels naive to me to discount the financial aspect of it all. Will play a big part in whatever happens imo
Yeah absolutely. As a versatile player with no clear starting position, his rumoured £100k a week looked like a bad deal tbh. Much more reasonable as a starting right back. Remains a lot though. I’m much more happy with the deal as starting right back, mind. He’s nothing more than emergency cover in his other two positions in my view.

As much as I love Hume, I genuinely think we are a better team with Geertruida starting at RB and think he was our best option there last season. If we are able to sign him, I think both will get a lot of starts next season either way, but he should be our regular one.

You think he's better than Mukiele? He's clearly not imo, Mukiele was one of our most important offensive players at times last season.

I prefer Geertruida at RB with Mukiele RCB
The way he played this season Mukiele could well be the best option at CB or RB tbf. I just love the offensive side of his game at RB and think he offers more than our other options.
Mukiele centre back and geertruida right back in our best xi imo
Who would you drop at CB?

As I've said though I think we'll lose a lot going forward by moving Mukiele into the centre.

Given that Hume (1st), Alderete (5th), Mukiele (6th), Ballard (7th), Reinildo (8th) and Geertruida (10th) make up 6 of our top 10 outfield players minutes wise, there's plenty of game time to go around IMO

I love the attacking side of his game at RB, I just think both Hume and Geertruida still offer some of that but Mukiele's pace at the back gives us so much more insurance against balls over the top, meaning we can be more aggressive when closing the ball down. He still manages to get forward anyway for set pieces and in open play when the RB can tuck in to cover

This is true especially with the extra minutes next season. I was more thinking about what I would go with if everyone is fit for say a European final or something.:D

I can see why. Personally I'd go Reinildo - Alderete - Mukiele - Geertruida but Reinildo - Alderete - Ballard - Mukiele is obviously also very strong!

In reality we'll be playing 50% more games as lot more travelling involved; we need every good player we currently have, and Geertruida is top of the list imo. Another 8 players of his ability would also be nice.

50%? its 8 games to start with and only 4 are away which is nowhere near 50%

obviously if we progress we will play more, if you win it you have played 17 games...but if we were that deep in the competition we would probably have to strenghten in january so the club could manage it

You forgot about our mammoth cup runs and the fact we're going to go far the Europa cup as well. There's another 12 games.

I think its horses for courses (form, opposition etc), but in terms of ability i think our strongest back four is reinildo, alderete, mukiele, geertruida. That's not to say Ballard, Hume (even O'Nien to a lesser extent) are bad players, we've just recruited some players who are capable at operating very close to the very top level.
