Rusyn

That summer was horrific. Speakman got all giddy at the previous season's success and decided it was kids or nothing

Triantis, Bellingham, Hemir, Seelt, Dack, Bishop, Mayenda, Rusyn, Pembele & Aouchiche

Bellingham is the outlier there - massive profit and a pretty decent player (not as good as we all pretended he was like) and I guess we made a profit on Triantis. Seelt might come good (or more likely we can sell for £6-7m and get a PSR profit) and of course Mayenda was eventually a success (and I think there is more to come).
Flo ghisolphi looks like a different bisto ....

But that was the model. Even with the pap, we must be up about £20m because of Bellingham alone. And that’s without the value of Mayenda taken account of.

Remember the massive reveal after about a month of hype, YouTube reels and speculation. Was convinced we’d signed the next shevchenko 🤣

That was manager-related, primarily.

Not saying we were ready to go up, we weren’t. but we did still have a lot of players who have now proved to be capable in the Premier League.
We didn't start (or end) the season with a team capable of getting promoted. That is where Speakman and co let us down - they focused too much on the future and not on the here and now.

All part of the journey of course and look where we are now....

I dont think it was at all. We needed to replace certain players and we went all in for youth and foreign lads and it was all a bit too much too quickly.

Like Mayenda is capable of that level after a season or so of settling and being put into a stronger side. But at the time of coming he was 18, Hemir 19, Burstow 19/20 and none were close to being ready and them we added Rusyn to the mix. Behind them we had Dan Neil at 21/22, Ekwah and trying to shoe-horn Jobe into his first full season.

We moved on players like Gooch and Batth before we had adequately replaced them in the squad. So having started with Ballard in fine form our back up was all kids in the backline - Cirkin and Alese in and mostly out, Huggins rushed back and then injured. for a while we had to play Seelt right back and Hume on the left. Ballard had an injury at the turn of the year and then was rushed back as we had one game with Seelt and Triantis - neither were close to looking ready at centre back.

Then Cirkin, Huggins and Alese had been out for ages we signed Hjelde as left back was a problem and the lad from Barnsley.

The problems were exasperated by the Beale appointment but we simply didnt have enough experience or quality at that point.

You’re missing my point.

I’m not saying we were good enough. I’m saying we were better than 16th. We should have been capable of a top half finish, with semi-competent management.

I didn’t think we should expect to go up that year tbh.

I think if we had gone up 1 or 2 seasons earlier I think we'd have come straight back down again. The extra season has given Ballard, Hume, Mayenda and others the chance to develop. Plus we'd secured Le Fee, signed Isidor etc.

I'm not missing the point. We had to rely on so many players who arguably still arent up to the championship now and certainly werent then - Hjelde, Rusyn, Ba, Seelt, Burstow, Hemir. Each of them were absolutely hopeless. Can you remember Calum Styles playing left back?

You can carry players for a while but having to play an entire season without an adequate centre forward and relying on one man for goals, with several key injuries like left back and with limoted experience around them is going to take its toll.

We barely had a goal threat outside of Clarke and lost him for 5 or 6 games around February as well. For the lack of goal threat and all the injuries 16th was about right.

Weld lost Batth, Gooch, Evans, Amad, Stewart, Simms from the previous seasons squad.
