Ghisolfi talk.

Agree I also trust the club on their decisions. Have the feeling it's the fact that the club would be more than happy to have had Patterson as backup keeper. It was more the case of Patterson wanting game time and not being happy to ride the pine for the rest of his contract. Roefs is clearly number one and rightly so.
Patto is a decent not outstanding championship keeper nothing wrong with that but I think ellborg is better

Possibility due to home grown role that we may loan out Elborg and have Patterson as back up

A Europa League squad can have 25 players, but 8 of them must be “homegrown”meaning trained within and English FA Academy between ages 15–21. Of those 8, at least 4 must be trained by the club itself. If a club cannot meet these numbers, its squad size is reduced accordingly

Rigg, Patterson - from the club

Ballard, Moore, o’nien - wider homegrown (Hume doesn’t count as Irish FA)

No doubt I’ve missed some players

Have a feeling we will see likes of Geragusian and others from u21s named in the Europa league squad

Clearly we need some homegrown players brought in
Good write-up, thanks for summarizing the situation there.

I agree we have to assume we'll for sure bring in one or two non-SAFC homegrown players. We could promote one or two U21s but I also wouldn't be totally shocked if we see a random move for Henderson.

Not yet … Patto has played a lot of senior football for his age at a far higher level than Elborg.
I think distribution from both are weaknesses which Iam sure they are working on.
Iam assuming that the club can see something in Elborg which is better than Patto can achieve
Done well in a baptism of fire really.. high pressure games to say the least!

He’s done well

If you think Mayenda is worth 15m then you can expect a visit from the men in white coats.... i know hes young but has shown nowhere near enough when called upon ..i doubt he will get 10 appearances next season..the only thing he has got is pace and when you are up against a better player than you who is just as quick theres always only going to be one winner..sorry to disappoint ...its all about opinions and mine is that hes not good enough.
We can use Osula as an example here. Went to derby scored 2 or 3 in 15 or so games. Came back and done very little at newcastle. End of the season he was on the verge of a 30m move to frankfurt.

Ben Doak went to boro and got 3 in 20, he was then sold to bournemouth for 20m

Brighton paid us 12m for Watson after one decent run in the championship (deal agreed before that superb goal of course) and they spent 35m on the olympiakos lad

But the best of all is Broja going for 20m, he is 24 and never scored more than 10 in a season ( that was for vitesse, 6 is his best apart from that season)

Broja was a laughable signing. I expect the promoted teams to make similar mistakes. How about 20 million Mayenda to Coventry?

I can see a loan abroad myself. Would do him the world of good getting regular games. Maybe Spain as he is highly rated in the national u21 setup

I do think we will have missed a trick letting Wilson/Mayenda leave before seeing how effective they may become under the new offside rule. Mayenda being home grown also helps massively in Europe.

If it didnt work out next year, his value may half at worst, but thats a gamble i think is worth taking

Eh ellborg has played in prem and Europe highest patto has played is championship granted he's played more football

They pay 15m now to avoid paying 40m in 3 years... if they agree that he has potential and the budget to take a relative risk
Who do you think will do this?personally I cannot see it happening at those prices ...If we thought he would be worth 40 million i three years time it makes sense for us to keep him!

If Patterson is back as second choice that that's regression. The lad is at his level in the Championship. I remember people on here slating his distribution and I defended him. They were right. His kicking is woeful. He also seemed more concerned in transforming into the Hulk at one stage which seemed odd as goalkeepers surely should be agile? Ghisolfi needs a better solution than keeping Patterson for Europe. How about getting Barry Bannan for a season? :p

We paid 16.5 rising to 19 for Talbi who had one decent season at Brugge. Yes he played some champions league football but overall the stats were on the low side. He managed 4 goals in 27 games in Belgium.

Clubs will pay the money and take the risks. I hope we keep the lad and give him one more season to breakthrough, or a loan to prove himself

It's lord Barry bannan I have you know

Slightly off topic, but it was his appointment that signalled we weren’t here to make the numbers up. A real statement of intent.

He has done an incredible job. To maintain the levels he’s reached so far will be incredibly difficult but if he can even get close we’ll be in for some ride next campaign.

It’s an exciting time. Sunderland is finally moving towards its potential and there are people involved at the club who genuinely believe it and are actioning it.

Watch this space mate ...he will probably go ..but for well under 10 million!

Broadhead was 7.5 rising to 10. Furuhashi was 9m. Tom Fellows 11.5m. Thats just championship signings

I do feel we forget how high fees are these days. The fact we were in the lower leagues signing free transfers and selling our best players for 10-15million is partly to blame. But now we dont have to sell and are in Europe, our player values are much much higher even for backup players or young prospects

Dybling from saints to Everton for 40m
Barely played a game and Moyes gave him pelters à couple of weeks ago for not showing enough

I think RLB rates him more than we all can guage. Him and Angulo will only improve

Mine was more a general comment as to why clubs may overpay for a player in his circumstances. In his specific case I don’t personally think he’ll develop to that degree but he’s definitely got some bankable attributes, plays up front and is on the radar of the Spanish National team set up. His old club reportedly gets 25% as well so you’d think we’d negotiate pretty hard for the fee as well as putting our own clause in.

One thing I’m really comfortable with is that any lack of success this coming season will not be through our ownership and football leadership structure failing to plan and prepare for next season.

Maybe things won’t go our way, key targets turn us down etc or we have some shocking injury issues. But the club will have actually tried to execute a proper plan.
This is why we are turning into a proper club hopefully we can keep the squad fresh and hungry in years to come

So who are the 16 then.

1. Roefs
2. Elborg
3. Hume
4. Mukiele
5. Ballard
6. Alderate
7. Onien
8. Reinaldo
9. Xhaka
10. Sadike
11. Diarra
12. Le Fee
13. Talbi
14. Angulo
15. Brobbey
16. Isador

I dont think any of those people are in doubt as to be first team ready.

Which means no rigg, no mayenda, no ta bi. Is that partly an age thing for rigg as I disagree hes not first team ready personally. It doesnt include Geertruida obviously. But also doesnt include cirkin or traore who we can therefore assume are leaving.

Beg to differ. Rigg has really come on late in the season. Will definitely be first team ready come August.
