Sunderland vs "the well-run clubs"

Spartan

Striker
Blanket finish in the end : Bournemouth a win ahead of us , Brighton and Brentford a point behind.

These clubs widely acknowledged to know what they're doing and spend their EPL cash wisely.

Bournemouth seem to have turned up an exceptional coach ( maybe we have too?).
Brentford decent season for a rookie coach. Brighton pinging it around doing what Brighton teams do.

Superb effort from us to come from Championship middleweights to the top of the EPL second tier in just two transfer windows.

These clubs have well balanced squads built over many windows. We've matched them in one season and what we have that they don't is the passion ,emotion, sense of theatre that SAFC supporters can bring to any fixture home or away.

That can’t be true! Where did you see that?

f***ing class if so though
We definitely had the cheapest squad so I suspect the wages would also be the lowest
Yet I had my mag mate basically making out we fluked it as it was a freak season in the PL
That doesn't make sense either. It's a weak premier, low points, freak season etc etc. Well why did they only get 49 points then? Surely if it was weak they would win the league with their expenditure? It's like them moaning about past seasons where teams got more points than us and Brighton but didn't get into Europe, well that's a different season

Could argue it was a more competitive league, with well run clubs taking points of each other.
A fact borne out by English success in Europe this season

It was mentioned a fair bit these are the clubs to emulate and we've done it well. They seem to be very well run behind the scenes.

What they've also done well though is sustain the way they operate. Brighton and Brentford both replaced successful managers without blinking. Bournemouth will have to do the same. All three have found ways to keep doing well even after losing key players.

Things change fast in football, hopefully we can keep doing as well as those clubs when it comes to being able to take changes in our stride.

To borrow a Le Bris-ism, ‘consistency is key’. We’ll be considered among the Brightons, Brentfords or Bournemouths when we finish in and around the Europa spots a few seasons in a row.

The exciting thing for us is that our ceiling is so much higher than the B clubs in terms of revenue through sustained success.

Next season’s challenge will be to prove we weren’t a one hit wonder. Xhaka is our first captain with a truly elite mentality and I really hope club will be moulded to that, even once he’s gone.

First time in my lifetime we have a clear structure and strategy off the field and it shows. Nice change from being an absolute basket case under previous regimes

Don't forget Palace. 12th last year and won the FA Cup, then dropped 3 league places this year but managed to sustain a European campaign that resulted in a trophy at the end of it.

I'd take finishing a few places below this season's finish and lifting the Europa League trophy next year
