How the Europa League works

Likely pot 3, any new teams to the competition get a base core equivalent to a certain percentage of their leagues coefficient. Us and Bournemouth should have the same score

Since the Prem is so strong in Europe, we come into it with a reasonably good coefficient score that would put us ahead of champions or regular competitors from weaker leagues.

Should we perform well in Europe and end up qualifying again the season after, we'll have bumped our individual coefficient up and may help get us into pot 2 in the future

I think we could move a little bit if there's a shock in the qualifiers and one of the higher ranked teams is knocked out. It's all a bit fluid until those are over.

I was a bit confused as I didnt know the nation had a coefficient as well as the club.

Would be nice to get a second European season and improve it, but I'm quite happy with one season to start with 🤣

Yeah the coefficient is basically a case of our league being so strong that UEFA would expect any team from it to be competitive regardless of prior European experience. Which is proving to be the case with us potentially winning all 3 European trophies this year and winning 2/3 last year.

We don't come into the League Cup til a round later now so we've already surpassed ourselves 😅
One of our better cup runs in recent years.

But we play 2 teams in each of the 4 pots regardless of what pot we are in?

Only slight disadvantage I can see is that we’d have more possible opponents to draw from pots 1 and 2.
yea a pot 1 team plays 6 games theoretically easier. Pot 3 where we are right now is just 2.

It's crazy to think we havent played in Europe for over 50 years for a club of our size.

I hope we never go back to the championship and have a period of sustained success, be that top half finishes, cup wins and European adventures.

The mags having 150+ games in meantime was a sickener.

Well, fuck them all!

Freiburg were excellent throughout the competition. You don’t get to the final by being a really poor side. Would you say Forest are a really poor side as well because we beat them 4-0 in the semi?
Did you watch many Freiburg games throughout the competition? You couldn’t have asked for a better opposition in a European final, they were terrible and it was pretty evident from the first whistle that Villa would beat them. That’s not to take anything away from Villa btw, they were excellent on the night.

Spurs proved last season that you can get to the final, and even win it, whilst being a poor side. Going back a bit but I remember Rangers getting to the final against Zenit about 20 year ago and they were honking. Should’ve been knocked out in virtually every round!

I keep hearing and reading this but you look down the list of clubs and they all seem very decent

Is there actually any benefit to being in a higher pot if everyone will just play 2 teams from each of the 4 pots? Can understand when they are drawing groups but for this format it seems a bit pointless.
No, It just means its a fairer way of achieving some sort of balance with every team playing similar standard teams rather than all the teams in a normal 'league'.

If we want away tickets we want the bigger sides away, If we want progression, we want the worst teams in each pot.

Maybe thats because they always qualify? But they are from some lesser ranked leagues and we should be able to compete with all of them.
