Tom Burwell

These corporate types just speak in lingo that immediately gets people's backs up. If we've learned owt it's to trust in KLD's judgement on the right people for the job.
All KLD will expect is that this bloke maximises bottom line.. the rest is all window dressing
Whether he has a southern accent, French accent etc.. who cares
They are all cut from same cloth
Weasel words, Venality and insincerity are their currency

FWIW, I quite enjoyed the podcast and the clear intent and determination in his voice and words.

But that means nowt if his assurances about 'fans first' and 'staying connected' are not reflected in the actions he and his team take.

There have been 3-4 really concerning off-field issues that have arisen in the last 6 weeks alone which mean his credibility is being questioned. The clubs ridiculous stance and draconian punishment given out to @SAFC2012 is just one of them.

The fact that he gave that interview to the Business of Sport podcast (part-owned by Methven - who is also a regular contributor to the podcasts) might not sit comfortably with some of our fans either.

The jury is out for me. See how we feel if the club continues to go down some of the routes recently taken.

More understated than his last one. Found the line about the 12th man not letting the Club be anything less than extraordinary a bit of a convoluted and sickly way of saying nowt, but at least he’s toned it down.

If he was just enthusiastic and his messages sounded like a real bloke I wouldn’t mind him at all if his heart’s in the right place.
so because we've had an amazing season on the pitch, it means we have to swoon over every single person at the club?

i don't like him cos i think he's a bullshitter. i don't like the ticket office manager as he is awful at his job and has banned one of our most loyal fans.

i love the players, KLD, the coaches, RLB, even the social media team and who ever came up with 'till the end' and 'the visitors' crack, a bunch of legends in my eyes. i've done every away game this season and will be travelling all over europe next season, doesn't mean i can't criticise people when its appropriate
I understand where you’re coming from on almost all of that, but I think you’re making too quick a judgement on him based on some admittedly naff LinkedIn crack. To say you don’t like him and he’s a bullshitter seems a bit harsh unless you’re privy too more evidence than the rest of us.

🤣🤣🤣 Surely you aren't being serious.

Speakman was an undoubted success here.
He really is. He didn't have a good word to say about him, he's now turning his attention to Burwell for some bizarre reason.

Unsure how you can make a firm opinion on Burwell so soon into his tenure. To say you don't like him, seems very extreme imo.

I also can't wrap my head around people who could watch his interview and not buy into him and the club who are ultimately trusting him to perform, someone who has history working for KLD.

Okey Dokey - we'll see whilst we watch Speaky sail off into the sunset.

I think it's very hard for someone in the role Burwell occupies to be fully trusted by fans of a club. The way people in such roles tend to speak, arguably have to speak, doesn't resonate with fans.

Bruce, albeit in a slightly different role, had a lifetime of supporting Sunderland to fall back on, which immediately engenders a sense of trust.

Perhaps it's better to have someone who isn't a fan as a CEO so they can take business decisions without an emotional attachment. Nobody expects the manager to be a lifelong fan.

I watched his interview on the Business of Sport podcast the other day and thought he looked very impressive and has a clear record of achievement in other sport administration roles.

Just when I thought you couldn’t get anymore ridiculous - you achieve it quite comfortably!

Maybe football is not your game?

I watched his 1hr 15 min interview on the podcast and can’t say I warmed to him. He gave me the impression that it was all about revenue. Mentioned our legends Kevin Phillips, Jermaine Defoe and Michael Ball - so we know his taste in music.😉

The thing is that Bournemouth are being successful on crowds of 11000 so I fail to see why he should think a prime objective should be to get every last penny he can out of Wearside and beyond by giving them ‘value’ as he puts it.

To be fair, his job is to care about the revenue. Something some previous CEOs haven't been very good at.

The stadium is only going to make so much money and unlike London and Manchester clubs is never going to be able to make as much from hospitality and conferences so we need to be looking at growing the revenues elsewhere and if that means selling shirts, TV subscriptions and sponsorships in the US and Asia then so be it.
