BBC Alternative League Tables - Data

Kent Boy 2

Striker
It all shows that football isnโ€™t played on computers ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

On xG points we should have finished 18th.
Home form we were 8th.
Away form we were 13th.
Goals scored from set pieces 17th.
Goals against from set pieces 10th.
Goals scored from long shots 16th.
Goals against from long shots 14th.
Goals scored by English players 20th.

The last is particularly impressive. A total of 1 (Riggy at Villa) - the lowest in over 100 years.

Final league position - 7th and Europa League. Stick that up your ar*e OPTA ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Totally agree. These statistics are there so they can slaver on about something and sound knowledgeable.

I thought the final league table and the stats above were all totally irrelevant. Itโ€™s only the justice table that really matters and apparently we are a miserable 33. Though the 2 minutes I wasted investigating the justice table did prove inconclusive as I couldnโ€™t find any info on it.

How did we finish 7th then?
Fulham and Brighton ahead of us home table below us away table.

Of the teams that actually finished above us, there's the top 5 who were ahead both home and away and Bournemouth who were behind in the home table.

Not all the same teams who were good at home were also good away and vice versa. Fulham great at home, poor away. Spurs, Chelsea, Everton, Forest and Palace all better away than at home, to varying degrees. Brighton same points as us at home but one less away.

We were better than the Mags both home and away.

Yes my point is that it instinctively feels like you should finish somewhere between your home and away positions. It seems statistically weird to me that we outperformed both our home and away position @Frijj thanks for the reply, does what I'm saying make sense to you? I'm clearly wrong, but can't work it out

XG should be filed along full press, half block and all that other crap the bedroom dwelling gonks love.

The thing I find funniest about the opposition to XG is that the club are pumping loads of money into the data science infrastructure. It's this kind of statistical analysis that allows us to unearth gems. Yet on here, because people don't understand XG, they boot off about it and call it a load of shit. It's literally the reason we're in the Europa League!

data analysis isn't necessarily XG and has been around in many sports before XG became a thing
