Maybe I'm just studying it more, but aleady it seems the calibre of club is a little stronger this year than last.

Italy sending Juve and Milan compared to Roma and Bologna, and Leverkusen rather than Freiberg, for example.

Getting out the group stage seems doable, given last year barely more than a point a game got you to at least a playoff, so last 8 feels a really achievable target. After than, who knows, but I've said elsewhere that I'd fancy our chances against most teams so why not give it a proper go.

Far higher calibre than the Conference league where Brighton should be one of the favourites to win the whole thing.

Ah I know. Any european competition is amazing but getting into Europa feels such a more prestigious competition with who we could play.

It is one big league, or a bunch of groups?
How big are the groups/how many teams do we play?
How many times do we play them?
How well do we have to do to progress to the knockouts?
How many knockout rounds are there to get to the final?
Are the knockouts one or two-legged?

The plus is that even if we go all the way to the final we only play 11 games. With a big enough squad we should be able to handle that.
 
One thing I am a bit curious about (even though it is academic in our case) - why did we get straight through to the group stage? Is it based on England's ranking? You would have thought if there were two English teams qualifying that the higher placed one would get straight into the groups but the second one would have to go through the preliminary stages. But Bournemouth and SAFC are both straight through to the group (which is great, obviously).

League Phase - 8
Round of 16 - 2
Qrt Final - 2
Semi Final - 2
Final - 1

15 games if we reach final. More likely 17 games because we should not even be aiming for top 8. Take the extra knock out round and rest our top players as much as possible in the league phase. A point a game will likely qualify for the knockout stage.

Just out of interest when was the last time we played 11 games and got to a cup final? Did I imagine that we struggled to win at Port Vale?

Would be nice to reach the final, but just winning some games against teams from Europe would be a major achievement.

yes nations ranked 1-5 (5th place teams but in englands case its 6th due to Villa winning Europa and finishing 4th) automatically go into the league phase
nations ranked 1-7s domestic cup winners (again City won the FA cup and finished in a champions league spot so that cup spot goes to the league)

England are 1st in the nations list by quite a way

Do any teams playing in CL qualifying rounds drop in to EL when they get knocked out ? I think there's three qualifying rounds then a play off before group stage ????

The first home game will 100% be our best 11.
