Luke O'Nien

I long for the day where we can open a Luke O'Nien that doesn't involve phrases like "he might be limited but..." or "he might not have the talent but..."

As much as these folk are trying to compliment him, its an absolute insult.

There is nothing limited or talentless about this bloke and if we had signed him for £20m from La Liga we'd all be raving about how we found a defender with O'Nien's attributes for the price.

He's a brilliant footballer, a great representative of our club and our city and he epitomises the journey we have been on.
Of course he has limitations, fuck me man

The day he signed and I read about him and his dedication to working hard I don't mind saying yet again that I knew he would make a big impact on SAFC.

We have had a lot of good lads playing for the Club over the years but by heavens we got to a point ten / fifteen years ago when when began to recruit more than our fair share if wasters and they had a disproportionally bad effect on the team . Getting a player in like Luke was a God send - he provides a role model for the excellent team we now have we need every player we bring in to have his same personal values and level of dedication to the game.

I think he’s great and I totally get the love in and am behind it. But he’s not the future is he??
No, but he's adequate backup who gives his all, rarely lets us down, covers multiple positions and leaves money to be spent elsewhere.if he is first or second choice we might be in bother, but he isnt that in any of the multiple positions he can cover.

and the love for him in the stadium on Sunday! it is a very small minority who always hate on him but they are loud enough for him to hear.
The lad always steps up. Yeah he’s made mistakes, but who the fuck hasn’t. It can obviously be annoying - didn’t need to get sent off at Citeh, skunk Park obviously - but I’d still want him around. Proved at Everton and Chelsea he’s no cheerleader. He’s no f***ing Gordon Armstrong! 😂

It's really surprised me he's been ok being a bit part player. I thought the way he is he'd be wanting to play every week. He's still good enough and young enough to be playing regularly. It suits us though so it's been a blessing and as you say he's made mistakes but his performances have outweighed any negativity around those mistakes.

Was beautiful, can't remember last time everyone sang Rockin All Over The World but the fact he was running around the pitch with his kids as it happened, with Europa on the score board must have been unbelievable for him to absorb.

If alderete was spraying the ball around like Luke was against Chelsea people would be creaming their pants man. I don’t think he gets the recognition he deserves for the quality of his play, and it’s sometimes easier to lump him in the limited but tries hard category which tbh is bull shit imo.
Couldn't agree more

and there is something so magical about the fact it was our league 1 boys who got that first goal.. from Luke's assist to Trai netting it.

That insta post set me off again!

The comments of not good enough clearly effect him but at the same time have probably made him work harder too. So double edge sword.121

The club will probably keep extending his contract until he retires here. Then he'll move to coaching at the AOL and get a Club Ambassador role.
So glad he's stepped up and mainly proved the doubters wrong again.

I know it's been said before, but I've thought for quite a while now that he is this generations Bally, The new Mr Sunderland

Just been looking at his career stats and there’s a weird one among them: he played 11000+ minutes in both League 1 and the Championship, with 1 minute difference between the two. Could be a decent pub quiz question one day, one way or another.

The lad embodies everything that is right about the club and supporters. Luke is living the dream we all had as youngsters about playing for the lads. Importantly he knows his limitations and works hard to improve. He has a long career ahead of him both on and off the pitch. He would be an excellent coach and mentor for the youngsters

I've been very critical of him at times but there's probably a lesson in there for me and others when he mentions social media telling him he's not good enough. I suspect he, and some other players, do read the likes of this forum.

Easy for me to say now I suppose that we've qualified for the Europa League and I've always kept it to critique of the football, but in fairness he stood up and was immense the last few weeks.

Not sure if he will read this but if he does, well done Luke, you were absolutely outstanding when it really counted and proved people like myself completely wrong, like you've done at every level for years now.

I might learn eventually

Apparently a huge part of his focus this season was on the dressing room and being a leader in there, keeping everyone on side etc.

And you can see that he succeeded with that when you hear about the spirit the players and manager have talked about. To integrate 8/9 new players into our starting line up - while lots of the dressing room have lost their place/ are shipped out, was really impressive.

I love him so much I'll even forgive his Jake Humphrey esque posting style.
