Discounts for OAPs

So Rachel Reeves giving discounts for fat lazy kids and thier parents in theme parks and McDonalds....

Sensible use of taxpayers' money, levelling up against the greedy pensioners, or pandering to those who shout loudest?

I'm intrigued. Like the OP. :)

It is marketing, simple as that.

You run a seaside cafe that is quiet during the week out of term time, so you need to attract people in. The cafe 5 minutes walk away does an OAP discount, because OAPs are generally the people out and about at the time you need customers through your door. Do you give a similar (or better) discount to get more customers, or not bother and make a loss that morning?

The question really is, should private businesses have the freedom to offer discounts to any group they like, in order to market their business and increase income? Surely the answer is yes, so long as it doesn't disadvantage any protected characteristic, such as a white skin only discount.

Must say I strongly disagree with OAP discounts here like.

Just do a midweek light bite special, why does it need to be be for people of a certain age? There's plenty people who get a day off work and want something little, why force them to buy a full meal they don't want?

I love to see discounts for our cherished OAPs.

They have given a lifetime of work and now find themselves embroiled in the benefits culture where work is a foreign language for the underclass.

Let’s celebrate and cherish our OAPs.

God bless you all.

Because they’re so special and worked so hard

Don’t begrudge those who’ve worked their whole life’s paying into the system reaping the rewards of retirement, including women who had to take breaks from work to raise kids.

Wasters who’ve played the system their entire lives and hardly put a foot into work piss me right off though.

It is a sales thing. If it didn't work then private businesses would not do it. By saying OAP discount, it makes them feel that bit more special, rather than a cheaper for everyone discount. It clearly works.

If anyone is offended by people who, in their own business, decide to offer OAPs discounts to get them in, don't go there.

It’s a very good question actually. I would say that it’s because generally their wealth is diminishing whereas everyone else’s is increasing as they’re still working

To be fair, they're rare nowadays. Most places that used to do them scrapped them for what I said. The only places which seem to have them are cafe's stuck in the 80's.

With the 4 day working weeks, flexi hours and so on, it just doesn't make sense anymore imo.

So this is a 11 page fuss about nothing?

That was my kind of feeling. Some people get discount in some places as a marketing thing, so what?

I haven't ignored anything, you just haven't listened to what I've said. You used median wealth to prove your point, which is ridiculous and I've told you so. You can have two pensioners living on the same low income. One rents the other has a million quid house. On paper the house owner is a millionaire. The renter is a pauper. Yet they live on identical incomes.
Now you know why I said you were a wum in that earlier post. It's because you are one and you are proving it with every reply here.

If I was a pensioner living in a £1m house and struggling I'd be using that asset to make me not struggle mind. You can't take it with you. ,

I was annoyed when I tried to use my bus pass after 11 on a Thursday night down in Brighton. I was refused. No thought for the pensionner who want to go clubbing.

That's just out-of-town OAPs. As a resident of B&H, I can use mine until 3.59 a.m.!
