England World Cup squad news

Aye, fair enough for Cherry's perspective. Mind, I'd bet you'd find Hammers fans saying the same about Bowen (albeit he's been a talisman in the past). But he's an impact sub with pace and a true winger. Palmer really isn't, and just won't provide any width if he's played there. You could argue that the versatility and left footed balance could have seen him nudge ahead of one of the three 10s who are going, I guess. However, on the seasons they've had - and on what they've produced for England to date - there's no way that Palmer gets in before JB, Eze or Rodgers. To date, he's really struggled to impact at international level. Madueke over Bowen and Palmer is arguable, for sure, but it just isn't worth the froth for me. None of the supposedly contentious ones are. None of these are on the level of Hoddle leaving out Gascoigne in 98 - and even that one had some logic behind it.

Aye, but he's just not a winger. If we're not picking Madueke then it needs to be someone who provides that width. Truth is, it's slim pickings out there for England for the next couple of years.
I’m just going off stats here but what impact has he had? 2 goals and 1 assist this season doesn’t scream super sub to me. All of his stats look like he’s been average and Arteta hasn’t fancied him much, after gameweek 11 he’s only had 3 appearances of over 65 minutes so either been taken off or subbed and not done enough to earn a regular 90 minutes.

Not saying Foden or Palmer have been good this season but if we are 1 down with 20 minutes to go he’d be 3rd on that list of 3 I’d turn to in the hope he’d make an impact.

I see the logic in 3 strikers, but should be Welbeck or even DCL over toney
DCL is too different to Kane imo to be that deputy

Welbeck I could see. Marginal call between the two for me. I can see obviously Toney’s pens might help. IIRC he’s more of a threat in the air too

Madueke’s started and played well regularly for England under Tuchel, why would he not be in? The idea that that should be ignored and some other player who’s played well in a different team for a different manager in a different system in a different league is nonsense.

How do fans expect managers to do well at international level if they’re just calling up new random players all the time? Makes zero sense. Same folk scream how important form is but dont care about their form for England

Madueke is in the squad isn't he?

It'll be the winger thing. Imagine he wants pace and width in late stages of games. For all their qualities, he wouldn't get that from either Foden or Palmer

Wonder how all of those knob heads who hounded Southgate out are feeling now? 🥲
Southgate would have dug up half his old team and had them playing in wheelchairs, father Ted style. 😂

Southgate never had the tactical balls to get our first trophy for years, right while it was being handed to him.

Southgate going was not the issue, I’ve a feeling tuchel is gonna be englands Beale moment! I hope he proves us wrong but I’m not overly optimistic.

I don't mind the squad tbh. Our World Cup fortunes hardly hinge on whether Maguire, Hall and Gibbs-White are in the squad or not. There is no point shoe-horning Palmer and Foden into the squad when they've been crap this season and the likes of Bellingham and Rogers will play ahead of them. Alexander-Arnold is better off left at home rather than sulking on the bench.

Tuchel has obviously picked players to fulfill specific roles for the tournament, rather than just picking the best players. I doubt we'll be the most exciting team to watch but could be effective.

I have the same concerns beyond the initial 15ish players, but the likes of Burn will barely touch the ball this summer so not sure it's worth twisting.
That’s what I’m worried about. If he comes on against a decent team he’s going to be chasing shadows.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so depressed and frustrated by a squad selection before. I’m normally quite balanced and take a ‘wait and see’ stance. But that squad selection to me is a reason for sacking and a drugs test.

EI’ve not kept up with Brentford this season bar our games but when I watch motd he doesn’t seem to start very much. If hendo was that important to the back room take him as a back room member. We could’ve had gibbs white there instead who’s been instrumental in the forsest side. Strange calls in every area. If we win it I won’t give a shit but if we fail he’s made a huge rod for himself.
Henderson has started 21 Premier League matches for Brentford this season and made 10 appearances from the bench in a team that have performed well.
He plays a specific role in the midfield, completely different to Gibbs-White.

They’re not comparable though, different positions

Kane and Watkins are a good pair of options as they’re so different.

Toney is more similar to Kane in that he gets involved in build up more, so if you want to rest Kane (after a mammoth season) if a game is done, Toney is probably the best most similar deputy
Welbeck would be a better pick. Least he is playing professional football standard games weekly . And doing well

I just dont think you can pick players from the league standard when theirs options at home. 41 year old Ronaldo is still one of the top scorers and he can barely move now. Even a 34 year old josh king scored 20 in 29

Had Madueke got many pre assists or whatever the stupid name for them is? Also do you honestly see us playing a fast winger and crossing the ball if we are a goal down? It’ll be 473 passes in the middle and hoping we can get it to Kane. I can’t remember much of the Japan game or the previous ones so I could be totally wrong but did we turn to fast wingers then and if so did they deliver much into the box?

Hopefully we don’t even need to touch the 8/10 players that are on the fringe but it just seems mental to take players like Henderson and Burn who everyone knows are there for the vibes but leave out Maguire and Palmer who if we are expecting crosses could get his massive head on one or palmer can just change a game in a second.

I've never watched a Saudi league game so I have no idea of the quality. If the coaches think Toney can still deliver at this level, then I'll trust them.

I liked him a lot at Brentford

The coaches think Djed Spence, Dan burn and a few others can deliver at this level man.

Just discussion. There will always be players people disagree on

He plays a role that has two if not more ahead of him. Gibbs white would bring more in a different area of midfield. We don’t have many creative types in that midfield selection while we have two or three that can play hendos role.

Definitely welbeck, he’s played at a higher level this season and has been one of the better strikers in the league. His all around game has always been better than toneys too.

I dont think either can have complaints. Especially foden who had 40+ appearances for England and struggled to nail down a place. Palmer in comparison has barely had a chance st that with only 14 appearances
