Anyone not wanting Europe?

Why would our squad be any better in a few years’ time?

In our previous spells in the top flight after the initial buzz of promotion it’s gradually circled the drain.
Different ownership, model and times hopefully m8, stated aim is progression and I’m assuming that’s a gradual process, evolution not revolution so to speak.

I’m replying to this not trying to be deliberately negative (I love where we are) but everyone would have said the same in 1999 and 2007.

Just dangerous to assume we’ll constantly get better.

I’ll openly admit that, whilst I’d love every minute, I’d also be worried about the impact on league form.

As Palace & Forest have proven this season, you need a bigger squad to cope with regularly having 2 games a week. At times this season we’ve struggled to fill our subs bench.

If we make our summer recruitment as good as last season (quality wise) then it would certainly be some adventure.

It feels different imho m8, I’ve been going since 1969, and whether it’s maturity negating emotion or whether it really is the case, there seems to be for the first time I can recall, a determined calculated direction to the club. They’re not getting everything right, but they’re heading in the right direction, they might lose a few along the way with their ditching of staff and practices that supporters hold dear, just like city did umpteen years ago, but to me, they’re living within their means, and are developing into a premier league club, and getting all the benefits that come with that, (fingers crossed).

I didn’t not want promotion but I was one of the ones worried we’d go straight back down.

The club bought well to ensure we didn’t.

So, I now have confidence they will have plans in place if we do get Europe
If we do get into Europe it will give us the opportunity to give players like Isodor, Rigg, and Geertruda (if we can persuade him to stay) regular games.
It will also allow us bring on relatively untested players like Anglo, Ta bi, and Elborg.
If we qualify for Europe then we will have to buy a few extra players, it's quite simple. The current squad would be stretched with the extra fixtures. But it's highly likely that we will buy the extra players.

Even if not, I'd rather still qualify and have a bash at it. Otherwise what is the point in existing as a club. You have to strive for improvement and to win trophies etc.
From our existing squad who don’t now get regular games, you could start with a core of players that consists of Elborg, Geertruda (if we can persuade him to stay), 09, Rigg and Isador.
We also will have the opportunity to rotate the wingers. And that’s without the fee t of any new signings we make.
Should be seen as an opportunity, not a hindrance, if we get there

This is Sunderland btw.
You just know that we will fail and Nufc will sneak above us.
This is a New Sunderland btw.
We haven't done "Sunderland" things for in excess of 18 months now. Promoted through play-offs, win at Wembley, last minute winners galore, stuff the mags twice, usually beat who we were supposed to beat (West Ham away, Forest H aside). Bought players who have added quality and not been complete dross, even from abroad. Got the off-field stuff right (in the main).

If NUFC finish above us, so what. They had a 10 years and £700m head start. This season has been very un-Sunderland if you still have the "This is Sunderland" mentality.

We’ve had to wait around 25years since we last knocked back Europe - reidy didn’t want to play that inter toto qualifier competition iirc. Hopefully we get there on Sunday.

Also, we now have a very intelligent and skilled ownership group, assisting a top notch football management team who will no doubt properly assess the best way to recruit this summer to approach the challenge of Europe. They’ll do it in the same (data driven) way they did as we approached the challenge of staying in the premier league after promotion last summer.

Actually, Newcastle can't qualify for Europe now, so I've changed my mind - we have to go for it! How funny would that be? "Have you ever seen a Geordie n Milan..."😄

I have to say I've done a full 180 on this.

I've talked it down for months and didn't think it'd be good for us, but now it's a game (and two other results) away, I'm actually getting pretty nervous about it. I want it. I'm excited about it.

Fuckin' ha'way me bonny lads!
I hope the club kept a register and ban the likes of you who didn't want Europe from the games next season

It's only fair IMO

I noticed we were becoming “un Sunderland” when we did the double over Boro then beat Coventry last season.
Then the old Sunderland wouldn’t have turned up at Wembley😀

I think it puts us on the relegation fight … which is usually 6-7 clubs for a long part of the season

Just look at Palace, Forest, Newcastle to see the problem… all 3 clubs would be at least 10 points probably more better off but for being in Europe.

Our squad won’t be big enough to avoid it I fear …. But it certainly does not mean relegation
It means playing teams like these:

Need to go for it. Can’t wait about and assume the opportunity will come back in the future, need to grasp it while it’s here. Same silly argument as “we can’t get promoted because we’re not ready”
