PGMOL apologise to Forest

What do you want to change? Apart from better decisions, what do you specifically want to change?

For a start, get rid of those nonsense monitors at the side of the pitch. If the VAR sees something that the ref has missed, then the VAR overrules the on-field referee. None of this “you might want to have another look at this mate”.

The onfield referee and the VAR shouldn’t be trying to ref the game together, talking each other through decisions.

Actually use it for clear & obvious errors instead of going through everything in slow motion.

Enforce the rules they set out at the start of the season. Handball leading directly to a goal? Disallowed. Keeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds? Corner to opposition. Grappling in the box, penalty/freekick against the first offending player. Don’t set directives at the start of the season, apply them for a few weeks, then just get bored of it.

Release the comms of all VAR interventions. No need to do it on a tele programme, just have a section on the PL website/app where they’re uploaded after every game.

The PL is the richest league in the world, pay for the best referees from around Europe to referee our games. Not some idiot from the “A-League” who wants to make himself the centre of attention in every game.

- Don’t agree re monitors. Referee is the one in charge, not the VAR. VAR was just as bad when there was no monitors in 2019.

- “Clear and obvious” doesn’t work as everyone’s opinions differ

- Agree on sticking to directives more forcefully

- Audio. Yeah, but that seems to anger people more than when they didn’t release it.

- Foreign refs. Nah. Logistically and finically doesn’t work, and also, people would just hate them once they became familiar with them after a bad call or two. It’s just people wanting a brand new punching bag.

Interesting that Rugby Union is a way more complex game with the potential for infringement all along the way yet their version helps the onfield referee with conversation and support, not suggesting he 'goes and looks again'. Complex decisions are way quicker too without any of the controversy we endure. Our lot need to up their game and go and watch the RU panel.

They’re the ones in charge currently. Change the rules, give that seniority to the VAR. The referee on the pitch clearly isn’t capable of doing the job.

It angers people because they’re clearly incompetent. They have a 4 minute discussion and still come to the wrong decision. Get rid of the discussion, the VAR just overrules the onfield referee.

Logistically and financially it would work perfectly, just like we have foreign managers and coaches. They’ll come if the money’s good enough.

It helps that the onfield referees aren’t totally incompetent though.

It’s totally different to being a foreign coach or a player. You’re in training every day with other people. What we going to do with refs, bring them over to run around in a field all week in a foreign country? None of the clubs are paying for that. We had VAR without monitors and it was still the same.

I've been a big advocate of VAR because the stats are undeniable with the correct decisions arrived at, but this week has me seriously reconsidering

I'd give it one more season and if they keep taking forever to eventually reach the wrong decision then it needs to be binned

What do you think the Premier League refs do when there’s not a game on? They’re in training, of some sort, almost every day.

At what point can these fuckers start doing more than just apologising for corruption? They twist about government intervention in football but decisions like tonight show exactly why they can't be trusted.

We already have a foreign ref and he's one of the worst out there in Mr Jarrad Gillett.

I wouldn't mind having the ref come out after the game and explain his thinking behind some of the decisions then you see the human side of it and not the robotic responses we get now.

I'm amazed they admitted it tbh.
Wont stop it happening again probably this week. Arsenal, Manu, Liverpool etc.

They’ve made the rules far more complex in recent times. Far too much interfering.

Take offside. They’ll spend 4 mins analysing whether someone’s ear is over the “line”, yet you can have a scenario where Maeda is a yard off in the centre of the box, the ball is played a few yards wide of him before going back into the box where he now scores seconds later and has been deemed not to have been interfering with play (due to him not receiving the initial pass).

If a player is offside when a ball is played forward, he should simply be offside. I feel sorry for linesmen, they’re having to deal with overly complex situations. No wonder they’re hesitant or incapable of making decisions. They have to watch up to a dozen players, clarify who was on/off depending where a future ball is played. The days of being able to simply look across the line has gone. And it hasn’t been made the game better.

Handball. Even the commentators & pundits don’t have a clue anymore.

Waving imaginary yellows. Why such inconsistency? I’ve seen countless times this season players doing it right in front of a ref and no card

Abuse to refs on the pitch. Why such inconsistency. You can see players swearing directly at the ref yet no card.

Other players rather than just the captain getting in the ref’s face. No action. Why such inconsistency.

8 seconds rule. Why such inconsistency?

The refs don’t help themselves here, it does feel sometimes they play the team or players. Keep it consistent across the board. And I’m talking about the times the ref clearly sees it, yet chooses not to issue a card. We all know it happens. We see it.

There’s always going to be circumstances where “clear and obvious” can’t be applied. However it’s becoming an easy phrase to hide behind. A lot more can be done

That's where I disagree. 'Holding' isn't even close to binary. It ranges from a hand on the arm to full on Chiellini style strangulation on Saka with thousands of degrees in between. Where do you draw the line? Even when the line is drawn you'll get people endlessly debating whether or not the bar has been met.

Fair enough, when I said holding, I had meant with a certain level of force, where do you draw the line? About when it impedes movement, specifically shirt-pulling. Im sure there will be a debate, but it gives the refs half a chance.

VAR can't tell the ref to give handball. The ref makes the judgement call following review. So how can you stop incidents like that, where a ref has another look and deems it to be accidental/natural position?

I do find it funny on here that for endless weeks we've had people saying VAR is corrupt and complaining the ref always goes with them on review. Then this time VAR pulls the ref to look, he sticks with his decision, and people moan on again
