Luke O'Nien

It’s a real ‘take nothing for granted’ attitude. He wasn’t the sub id have made but he proved me wrong. I won’t say again as I am a massive fan of his. Well done, Luke. Again.

Must be the only player in our squad who is judged against perfection every single appearance, and slammed whenever there’s a mistake.

Every player makes mistakes every single game, some of them a shitload more than him, but they’re judged against a far more forgiving standard.

How many managers is that now who’ve relied on him in a key role? Be it first choice centre half, or a reliable substitute? All wrong, apparently.

Le Bris has managed him well this year. He’s been carefully acclimatised to the step up. He’s made some awful mistakes, but so have loads of other players. He’s also put in some tremendous performances in very important games.

Only the most negative/stubborn supporters slag him off now. Or WUMs. Energy sappers, should be completely ignored.
Likewise with Hume …
Strange how 2 players who have come all the way through with us and are a big part of a wonderful season/getting us to where we are in recent times-get grief-they should have our full backing .

I honestly feel we are a better side with him in CB which is mad considering some of the options we have at CB

He’s probably not a better player than any of the other options. Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Geertruida are fantastic options at this level for a newly promoted side in fairness.

He breaks lines into midfield better than any of them though (Alderete got caught a few times mid season so stopped doing it as much) whether it’s through carrying the ball himself or his passing off either foot.

Thats why we do occasionally look better as a whole when he’s in there. And when the defensive side goes his way, ie cuts out his mistakes and wins his tackles/headers he looks every inch a Premier League centre half.

From League One to European football.

What a great man for our club.

I know it's been done to death but he was the exact sort of character we needed to emerge as a dressing room leader under this ownership after some of the unprofessional wastes of space we had in there during the Short and Donald eras.

The contribution he's made towards the club goes way, way beyond his performances on the pitch.

Agree. I just feels he adds 'something' which adds to the drive of the players. I think the combo of him and Xhaka together as captains is dynamite and probably hasn't been picked up on.
We certainly get up the pitch more and score a lot more goals with him in the side. His passing from the back especially is excellent and underrated, he is our only defender who can play through the lines as well as he does. Alderete can but with less consistency, LON accuracy especially long range is top notch.
