SMB Film Thread 2026

Not entirely sure where to put this, but a few people might be familiar with his work.

The artist Tony Stella has died. Over the last 5 years or so, his work has garnered a cult following. He’s a film poster artist in the traditional vein, creating hand-drawn/painted images. As far as I know, he was self-taught, and he was increasingly famous for taking old films and giving them new poster art. A load of his work has featured on the cover of boutique label Blu-ray/4k releases, too.

Scant information about his age, etc, is available, but I gather he was possibly only in his 40s. In my opinion, his artwork is excellent and well worth checking out. His style is instantly recognisable, if you know it. A sad loss to fans of this area of film.

Very talented. RIP.
Cast a Dark Shadow [1955] 6/10
Dirk Bogarde as a gold-digging killer? Yes please.

The Bad and the Beautiful [1952] 8/10

Kirk Douglas at his best but not as bad as I thought he was going to be.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers [1946] 7/10

Ice-cold murderer Barbara Stanwyck cucks alkie Kirk Douglas. Lizabeth Scott plays it sweet for a change.

Thoroughly enjoyed Cast a Dark Shadow. It’s a modest film and nothing special, but it’s very solid, and Dirk is great. Apparently Lockwood was blamed for its poor box office because her name had tanked.

Tommy Boy [1995] 2/10
Watched because Bill Simmons rated it #2 in his top 5 90s comedies during the Rewatchables episode of There's Something About Mary. You did me dirty, Bill.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - Directors Cut
Couldn't remember which version(s) of this I've previously watched so went for the directors cut.
It's still spectacular, Spielberg does this kind of thing better than anybody, really hoping Disclosure Day follows suit.
8.5/10

General rule of thumb:

Theatrical - fine
Director's Cut - better
Special Edition - avoid

Midnight Run - 1988
Watched this crime caper tonight starring Bob De Niro in his prime 🤤😜
A pretty good yarn about a mafia accountant that everybody is out to get and Bob needs to deliver him back to a sleazy bail bondsman.
Some funny bits, some touching bits (not in a sexy way) some action bits which on the whole added up to being an enjoyable watch.
Give it a solid 7.5/10

Shocking rating, come on it's an 8.5 all day long. ;)

really hoping Disclosure Day follows suit.

I saw the trailer for that earlier. It's managed to lower my expectations considerably. I had been looking forward to it but it actually looks a bit shit.

That said, I watched some utter turd tonight and still made it to the end, so I'll probably still watch it.

The Sand (2015) (Prime Video)
Spring break kids get eaten by something in the sand on the beach. Kind of like Blood Beach from 1980 if anyone remembers that, but in a single location with shitty effects and with a kind of "the floor is lava" vibe. Well, more like "the floor is glue, but made of tiny tentacles that dissolve flesh".
3/10 but only because of the boobs at the start. 2/10 otherwise.

I was wondering if they were deliberately holding something back in that trailer
