BBC Remembering 2012 - why Sunderland away means more to Man Utd than normal

"You thought it was yours, you thought it was yours, we heard you singing, then Sergio scored."

Good song that like. :D

The article is very bitter, I agree. Bit weird. I was there in 2012. It was a bit of a laugh.

Funny thing was we were all hanging around to watch a team be presented with the Premiership at the SOL and congratulation them. We had a good relationship with Man Utd.

But it was not our job to commiserate we had handed that game plus the 4 points we took off Man City to them on a plate.

All we did was take a moment to get some enjoyment out of the way the day unfolded and make something of the drama after a shit day.
They need to get over themselves. When you are Sunderland you learn to have a sense of humour

We still haven't got over Jimmy Hill and Coventry...just saying...

Funny thing is we had …. If it wasn’t for social media it would be ancient history.

Iam just waiting for us to make our 6 title wins, the unjustness of the 50s scandal relevant to today …. It’s much more relevant actually as Hill was a blip, these other things still define who we are today.

I always say we benefited 3 years later when we got promoted against West Ham 2/3 days after winning fa cup pissed and determined to give Pop Robson promotion… they just laid down and died for us that day… our players were as nervous as hell… as were the fans .

I know a few of their fans and they have mentioned this to me...a lot of them still hate us because of that day.

I understand as it would be like an opposition team celebrating Newcastle pipping us to the title in a game against us. Imagine it would cause a lot of long term resentment.

Anyone there that day will recall Man Utd fans being cocky and thinking it was done for quite a large part of the 2nd half. City came back and they were left with egg on their faces. Theres a lesson to be learned.
I always got on with Man Utd fans but they went on like absolute arseholes that day.

Hits the nail on the head that. About time they moved on

Always been cocky, chippy fans. Never liked them.
My memories of them go back to thousands of them at RP in 1986? for FA Cup.

Weird because I remember walking back to the station through them after the 2014 semi at OT and they pretty much all congratulated & wished us well (we were playing City in the final tbf).

They also forget they did piss takes a plenty when we got relegated towards end of season down there (2006), so it goes part and parcel (or should) between fan bases. As mentioned we took 4 points off city that season, they got beat off them both times. They threw away a 2 or 3 goal lead at home to Everton to draw 4-4 with a few games to go, those moments across season were reason they didnt win it not a part of ground taking the piss as Aguero banged in the winner to take it away from them.

It’s weird how sensitive they are about a bit of piss taking. I would imagine if it had been City at the SoL and they had lost the title, we probably would have done the same thing to them. It’s funny how they were fine with taking the piss out of us when we were relegated there in 2006.

Guess it depends. The lads I know go to all of the away games and were up here that day...

Just watching Sky there and a reporter has asked Carrick about it and he said it still sticks with him

I mean how long are they going to bang on about what was some harmful banter as though we'd lost them the league. It's ridiculous, every time they play us they seem to want to enact revenge

Nah they won the league every season for 15 years …. I think msn Utd fans have no self awareness around the drama of the mighty falling. It doesn’t even compare to if we once might win the league … it really doesn’t… and as the plucky underdog football would want us to win it.
