Creativity poor

There is a valid discussion to be had here but using Saturday as a basis to go off feels a bit pointless. We were a man down for most of it and rightly were prioritizing defending a lead for a lot of the game for that period. Bit of a shame we didn't get to really see how/if the tweak in personnel would have made much difference compared to last week.

In the longer term though I think the creativity problem is mainly in the wider areas. Most teams defend like we do blocking out the central part of the pitch so we need to make things happen in the channels to both assist and score. I don't think it's fair to pick on individuals, as no one in our whole squad has really looked consistently good in those areas. We could well see a new left and right first choice winger come in with Talbi, Angulo and Jocelyn being cover. Le Fee and Rigg are options which only work with properly attacking full backs and a lot more possession and territory, I think. Most their minutes should probably come playing as no.8 and no.10s in our system.

Hopefully Angulo hits the ground running in pre-season. Or we need 2 new starting wingers
We need a goalscorer
Wingers are the problem. We don’t really have a good winger at the club. We don’t have a man capable of beating a fullback and getting crosses into the box. We are too slow in the regard.
and we need a goalscorer

Thing is we have brought in/ tried
Mundle
Traore
Adingra
Angulo
Talbi
Ta Bi
Rigg ( to a lesser extent )
Hume
None of them have been the scoring wingers so many of us fans would like
I reckon the issue is how we are set up by the coaching staff and less the quality of the winger. Add in the chopping and changing of FB’s and we aren’t doing ourselves any favours.
Suggesting a further 2 wingers could be throwing good money after bad

Talbi has 6 G/A in the PL (26 games) having only started 43% of games available and only playing 46% of all available minutes.

That's an excellent return, especially for a 20 year old playing in a defensively minded side in his first year in the PL.

The issue is not needing to go out and buy another winger (or two) as is being suggested.

The issue is he is not being given consistent minutes or starts, despite proving he's more than capable. He also does excellent defensive work, which is important to the manager when it comes to his wingers.

Two of that list are clearly not wingers and were tried because we had no other good options to use on the right wing (Hume and Rigg). We'll be to move on Adingra, release Traore and hopefully loan out Mundle. That leaves just three others who are all youngsters who I think can offer something from the bench but haven't done enough to consistently start (yet). They won't be on huge wages or expecting to start every game IMO.

I completely agree we've prioritised defensive solidity in our set up and player selection this season over attacking flair. Would we have performed better with Adingra playing regularly over Le Fee? Perhaps but comfortably securing our EPL status as a result of the overall selection and tactics used is hard to argue with.

To progress as a team I don't think we should be saying we choose one over the other, we should be looking for players who are good in both departments. We clearly need a RW who can offer more offensively than anyone we've used there this season has showed on a consistent basis.

I also think there is a case to make for a LW but perhaps Talbi/Anuglo are enough between them? Still an open question IMO.

To be fair I do quite like Talbi and Angulo seems promising. I wouldn't be against giving them runs in the team. They both look diligent defensively and are pacey with potential for end product too. Talbi just needs to work on his left foot IMO and he'd come on a lot.

I reckon we expected more contribution from Diarra, Le Fee and Brobbey than what we've had. A new winger, a new striker and a new CM (not to replace Brobbey before anyone starts pouting, but to play off him)

We're very well structured without the ball which has, apart from a few notable exceptions, made us hard to beat. As a consequence of that our attacking players are rarely in space when we do get the ball. So much easier to create if you have time and space but that's the trick.

Brobbey will never be an out and out goalscorer, simple as that. Hold up play brilliant but he'll only ever be a 1 in 3 / 1 in 4 striker

We are a work in progress and compared to 12 months ago where we are and what we have achieved is way beyond anyone’s expectations. I’m happy to let the management do their thing.

I agree. Hopefully we spend big or get another under valued gem

I reckon Angulo and Talbi will kick on big time next season. The problem is we needed players that were up to speed as soon as they came in the door and these are 2 young players with loads of potential looking to make a step up from a lesser league.
