Defensive drop off

Mowgli

Whats happened?

Start of the season and even not that long ago we were solid, compact and always able to nick game. Wasn't long ago only 2 or 3 teams had conceded less.

We could head balls out of the box all day. Now we have conceded 9 in 2 goals and nearly all from crosses. Gaps all over the field. Has RLB been told to be more attacking and transition the team or summit?

Definitely something changed. Can't just be the early adrenaline

We have definitely tried to get on the ball more and attack with more numbers in recent games. Our game really isn’t suited to that though, Ballard Alderete and Hume are all pretty slow, Xhaka is dreadful running back to his own goal. Le Fee has a bad habit when playing wide of letting his man run off him. This team is set up to play counterattacking football and be a sit deep defensive team. Lets be brutally honest Villa should of been 4 or 5 up last week before complacency kicked in and they thought the game was won and let us back in from nowhere but this team we get completely ran all over last the last 2 weeks if we open up like we have

Mukiele went to right back 2nd half of the season when Ballard and Alderete were both fit and became CB 1st choice

Said in another thread but is there pressure in the coach to be more expansive?

If we are going to rely on player trading then you usually need to play good football to get players sold for big money.

Few things.

Bit of regression/luck not going out way.
Players having a natural drop off, due to tiredness or knowing the games aren't *as* vital
It does seem we're playing a bit more attacking, or open.

Good post. Should at least be an end to thinking we can or should be playing in a more open or progressive style. We are getting humped doing it.

I definitely think he’s tried to be more attacking since it looked like we were more or less guaranteed to be safe after beating Leeds. Regis was constantly getting asked about been more expansive and he did say that’s the next layer. Like a say though this group of players aren’t suited to that. Its why Ballard and Alderete looked like world beaters playjing on our 18 yard line heading and kicking with no space inbetween them or behind them but soon as we open this team up the personnel really isn’t suited to that.
