Bizarre play-offs situation in the Eredivise 2

Shamelessly copied the following text from a reddit thread because it's quite funny:

FC Den Bosch faces a bizarre mathematical paradox in the final round of the season: they are actually better off **losing** their match against ADO Den Haag to qualify for the promotion play-offs. Under the league's complex "period title" system, if ADO Den Haag (who already secured a play-off spot) finishes in the top two of the current period, their spare ticket trickles down to the highest-ranked team in the overall league table without a ticket, which is Den Bosch. However, if Den Bosch wins the game, they risk helping Vitesse overtake ADO in the period standings. If Vitesse claims that period spot directly, Den Bosch loses their "backdoor" entry and is eliminated.

On top of this, they have to publish a statement declaring their intent to win the game, and people are saying most bookies in Holland aren't taking bets on it :lol:
 

Sounds a bit like the scottish league where the league splits part way through the season. So is it saying if Den Haag finish in the top 2 their play off spot drops to a team outside the automatic play off spots before the league split (Den Bosch). But Den Bosch winning would mean that extra place doesn't become avaiable meaning they'd miss out.

So a premier league comparison is if chelsea win the FA Cup we'd prefer them to finish top 6 so the europa league spot drops to 7th. In that scenario it could end up being beneficial for us to lose against chelsea on the last day to make sure they get top 6, opening up an extra Europa League place?

Is that correct? :lol:

I've read through a few Dutch fans arguing about the current system and in all honesty i'm not even fully sure :lol: :lol:

The OP is on about the promotion race to the top flight of the Dutch league

There isn't a split in the Dutch league.

I don't understand as Den Haag are top of the league and are already up as Champions and Den Bosch are 9th and can't finish lower than that or higher than that :lol:

Right so after looking into the 'period title' system, the second eredivise has a system where over 4 periods of 8/9 games whoever does the best out of the whole league can earn a place in the play-offs if they don't finish in the actual play-off positions themselves

So if Bosch in 9th lose the last game of the season they get play-offs, if they draw or win they risk Den Haag dropping below Vitesse in the current period

I don't understand as Vitesse are on 44 points in 11th and and Den Bosch are 9th on 51 points.

The play-off is played by the teams in 3rd to 8th but as PSV youth team are in the top 8 and can't get promoted. Den Bosch enter the promotion play-offs in 9th.

Den Bosch regardless of what they do in their final game can't finish higher or lower than 9th :lol:

Den Haag are already champions and automatically promoted :lol:

How does this work for their domestic cups then? Assuming you can't have a senior and youth team in the same copetition if they can't play eachother?

Remember years ago, was some random Argentinian league which had a random relegation rule which based relegation on the last three years combined form.

Last day of the season two teams played each other who, because of that rule, would both stay up with a draw. Bookies didn't realise, made a good few bob betting on the draw and 0-0 and no goalscorer etc .... In that one (thanks to a Facebook group I was in).

Rare example of having that edge on the bookies.
