Creating chances.

I thought we did sacrifice our usual solidity for something more adventurous. I'm not complaining about it, but the defence was more exposed and vulnerable to counter attacks.

Seven on target against Villa, Eight on target against the unwashed.

We've started to create far more chances than at any other time of the season. Yes, yesterday was a kick in the nads but we're definitely heading in the right direction.

KTF.
Its a great point. Not long ago on here people were quoting numbers about how many games we had not scored from open play.

I'm inclined to disagree. Our defence was exposed because of individual mistakes much further up the pitch. Villa's counter attacks were just superbly swift.

The positive for me is we’ve not sacrificed defence to create more chances. We gave up far too many chances yesterday but that wasn’t cos we were ploughing forward.

Goal 1 - ELF doesn’t track McGinn and Sadiki realised too late to cover.
Goal 2 - Rigg doesn’t track the run and stop the cross.
Goal 3 - Reinildo gives the ball away really poorly.
Goal 4 - Talbi doesn’t stop the cross but it’s 2v1 in the box and we should defend it better.

They’re all just individual errors caused by good play by Villa, but not because we’re throwing men forward.
Tracking the runners is the big one for me, we are poor at it.

We didn’t do well defensively on Saturday but we’ve got a current defensive record, so with a little work from Régis and Ballard back I reckon we can be more solid there without sacrificing our ability to create chances, which does seem to be improving.

It was also the first time we’ve conceded 4 all season. As with all things there’s a balance.
We

3 of the goals O’Nien is seen diving through the Air nowhere near the ball.

All 4 goals were poorly managed and defended.

In both of those away games, we conceded early so most likely changed it up quickly to be more on the front foot and try to get back into the game.

I’m not sure anything has changed yet to what others are feeling in terms of the shackles being off.

I think we struggle with Luke in there defensively not because of any lack of ability but lack of height. All season we are set up to funnel opposition down the wings and deal with any crosses with the big men in the box.

Difference v Villa was partly that we miss the height, and partly that they delivered excellent crosses from better positions as they had the beating of our full backs a few times.

I think people are starting to read Brobbey better and it's creating chances for others.
That said, mind, he wasn't even on the pitch for our last three on target, on Sunday.
