Luke O'Nien

This is an objective reporter.
Doesn't have 09 as our worst player.
Maybe he wasn't looking at 09 in so much detail to try and blame him for everything. And he probably realised watkins was on fire and is one of the best strikers in the league.
Its a bit sad imo when footy fans from other teams look objectively and don't put him down as much as the 'support' from his own team.
Interesting that reinildo was the lowest marked player from our team
Subjective. All purely his own opinion, which is fine. I watched the whole of the game yesterday, and just about every other Sunderland game this and previous seasons and trust my own opinion of our players' capabilities. And lovely, loyal lad that he is, I don't think O'Nien should be selected in front of other central defenders we have at the club when they're fit. Another subjective opinion.

Aye - When you play top teams this happens.
Gabriele one of the best players in the league , but if 09 had let cherki waltz past him for cities opener , or haaland easily lose him for the winner, like happened yesterday , the amount of fans saying 09 isn't good enough would be the same.

Yesterday should all be about the courage of the team playing away at the 4th best club in the league , and producing an exciting game.
But it's all about how shit our defending was.

I'm disappointed with the defending yesterday. Mainly because I thought we matched them for most of the game.

Their quality did shine through and they created some good goals. But I do think that we did more than enough to come away with the 3 points - with better defending we would have.

I think teams on the back of a mid week European game are generally a bit below par. I think this was the case with Villa yesterday - we could have taken all 3 points. I'm sure RLB will be looking at the goals and seeing where we could have done better. It wasn't just one player either - several of them failed to stop crosses / lost their man etc.

For the goal i dont think onien was. Dont know where he should be if not there. Sat in ready to take a runner or cut out a low/poor cross. Hume should be goalside and all over Abraham
Abraham is onien man if there is two of them maybe one in front goal side and one level on line on the goal line no way in the world should he be getting to that ball first it was the story of oniens afternoon

I don't think the defending was that bad - people seem to forgot that the opposition are actually trying to score.

That said, it's not a controversial opinion to say that O'Nien isn't a premier league standard defender. Ballard was leagues ahead of him when he came on. O'Nien shouldn't be anywhere near the first team unless we have no other options.

I think a lot of this comes from the fact that he's always there and involved. Should be one of his great strengths that he's always up with play and throwing himself in but it puts him in the crosshairs because whatever happens afterwards is aimed squarely at him, and not the other teammates who may have variously lost their man, been slow to get back, not tried to pick up a runner etc.

I think most would agree marra.

They made more defensive mistakes than us.
Humes goal was really poor.
The way le fee got the ball and isidor clean through for our third. And for diarra to be clean through minutes later.
These things happen. Rather than say villa were poor id prefer to say we attacked and closed them down well and our movement was great.

I dont know how you can say he is oniens man when its hume marking him in the whole build up and gets brushed aside so easy. Oniens job should have been 2 yards further forward and attacking the cross to then make an easy clearance but hume was weak as piss

He’s centre forward he’s oniens man ! He marked the centre forward all game

I was as pissed off as anyone with both the Onion and Diarra. Have slept on it now and still miffed, but tempered by the fact were having a class season and are 2 points off 6th.

Maybe we can all acknowledge that and move on now?

Not that im the authority on what people can discuss ofcourse.

Read a lot of takes on yesterday but the cold, hard fact is that we were appalling at the back. We conceded 4 but it could easily have been 2 or 3 more. There were lots of collective errors but O’Nien in particular wasn’t great. I like the lad but he shouldn’t be a regular starter and that needs to be addressed. The forward play papered over a lot of cracks but Villa have a strong team and it showed. They’re where we’re aiming to get to but the focus now needs to be on bringing in quality. That’s why they won yesterday. Not because of any lack of effort on our part, they just had more quality.

Sensible post mate, I kept off the socials till today
I didn't want to see either Diarra or O'Nien slaughtered on line.

He’s centre forward he’s oniens man ! He marked the centre forward all game

That doesnt mean its his man every where he goes 😂 may as well say alderete was at fault for not marking him. Centre forward afterall. When play pushes over and a defender is pulled out, everyone does their bit. Cant just say, well its your man, hes a striker, ill just sit back here

Always frustrating when we play the way we did, then get back in the game, then lose out when we could have sneaked 3 points.

That said, no one would have predicted we would be pretty much matching a CL team at their place, when many would have settled for PL survival at any cost this season.

I'm proud of how we've performed this season, equally sure RLB and KLD will know who to move on and replace for next season

Icing on the cake is our perennial six points from them up the road.

I thought the same but Ballard might have been told 30 minutes you have to manage players injuries

Well said, we've had a fantastic season - cushion and nicking a Conference European League spot, or finishing around tenth from here, I'm ok with either - former preferably of course, but thinking back to August I thought we'd be fighting for our lives the whole season

We've had a few clangers of results along the way, but this has been a great campaign
