Legends Way fan vote: choose the 14 legends

Absolutely deserves to be in the conversation.

Has been with us from the lowest finish in our history to what is likely going to be either our third or fourth highest in about 60 years (actually I'm unsure of since when)

Hes also still there, still playing and plenty of time to become a bigger legend or do something stupid.

To me you cant be a club legend while still playing.

His time will come

For whatever reason there would be people who would have voted for her, that's my point.

You don't think she should have been on the list, that's fine, it's your view and right. The club, for whatever reason thought otherwise.
Doesn't make them right though. I'd be very keen to see the numbers.

I'd argue the same. It isn't fact though. It's an opinion, that would be supported by the vast majority I'd guess, which is also an opinion.

The crazy thing is the club allowed anyone to vote multiple times without registering. Clearly they wanted to get a few “modern” votes in the for publicity. The cynic would suggest that club officials voted multiple times for people like Scott - not me though.

Might as well go the whole way and nominate Kate Adie.
Claiming she’s a “Sunderland legend” is taking the piss a bit, mind.

A couple of weeks ago I was very bored in work, so did some data scraping to try and find out exactly how many games have been played at the SoL.

I had a ball park figure of 715 (including internationals and friendlies) then totally hit a wall trying to find out how many women’s games have been played at the ground. I found 7 over the past couple of seasons, and then totally hit a wall because up until a couple of years ago, absolutely no-one gave a shit about women’s football. This is to say that it’s very possible we’re saying someone is a club legend who’s never even kicked a ball at the SoL…

(if anyone can tell me otherwise and provide any of the missing data, do let me know)
How many games did Jill Scott play for Sunderland?

How many at the SOL?

One for the wokees.

The best way to show disapproval for this list and try to make changes is for people to message the club directly with individual complaints. A volume of people complaining will show them the fanbase are unhappy with this.

Jill Scott’s a great ambassador for the city and the area. Frequently mentions the city/club on the biggest football podcast in the country. The Women’s team deserve representation on any list. She got the votes and deserves a place. To say otherwise is just misogyny.
So you're saying as long as you frequently mention the city/ club on a national podcast, then that's all the criteria needed for a woman to be classed as a club legend? Basically all you've said is, a woman is speaking on a podcast, so let's give her an award for it because shes a woman doing things that men do, and make sure if you do any lists for anything no matter what it's for, the women's team must automatically be represented on it regardless of whether they deserve to be on it or not. You sound really misogynistic and hypocritical.

To criticise her for her achievements because shes a woman is misogyny.

To suggest that in the history of this club, she may have a weak argument on what shes actually done in red and white stripes is fair criticism.

To call her a club legend seems far fetched. Most of her successes have been away from SAFC and while shes vocally proud of club and city, I dont think that qualifies you to be on the SAFC legends list purely because of your gender.

Im all for having female players on the list and recognised. But I dont think shes the best choice.

I couldn't care less to be fair. Sol has been there for nearly 30 years. Its existed for this long without it and in all that time I haven't desired or lobbied for recognition of 14 "legends" to be displayed around the stadium. Its a lovely idea but im only really arsed about 11 on the field. Its crackers to me that Gurney and Thorpe aren't there but thats recency bias and ignorance im afraid
I'm the opposite - furious.

I've paid £250 to have a family stone next to a "legend".

I don't want to tell my grand children to look for ours next to someone who played for us 40 times EVER. Or next to a man that never played for us and had protests to try and force him to leave. And so on.
I'd argue its much nearer fact than opinion saying Jill Scott doesn't deserve to be anywhere near legend status
She's probably something like 100th of female players and 1000th of all wider SAFC family in the list of deserves commemorating in this

I complained and asked if I could choose to have mine next to Carter (even though the FAQs already told me you can't).

Got a very brief email back saying "not possible" so I replied and urged a reconsider of those chosen and they haven't replied now.

Thats a pretty reductive way to view the man who oversaw the building of the stadium, 5 promotions, delivered our highest finishes since the 50s and created the Foundation and Beacon of Light. Maybe start with that when your discussing it with your grandkids instead of a glass half empty whinge.
So what if people protests him. Some of our fans are morons. Some wanted RLB sacked before the play offs last season. If you dont like Murray or Scott ignore them and concentrate on Quinn or Hurley. I've got the feeling they is a compo face and point picture in the making with you.

I emailed and asked if mine could be next to Shack or Hurley as they were two of my Dad's all time favourites that he talked incessantly about. I was told not possible.

I know it's petty, but I'll be narked if my stone ends up next to someone I dislike on the list.

You know nothing about me mate.

I think history has rightly shed Murray in a better light than he was thought of before.

But in the top 14 of legends EVER? Not for me.for starters, how does it possibly make sense that he is in ahead of the man who founded the club in the first place?! Why does he deserve more than whoever built Roker Park?

I can't imagine Bobby Gurney or Charlie Buchan got many protests you whopper

Murray saved the club from folding altogether but didn't have the finances to sustain us in the top flight. Nothing wrong with that he was a self made Millionaire playing in a Billionaires playground.

I still wouldn't have him on Legends way simply because he never played for the team and already has the Murray gates at the SOL.

Yes I don't individually dislike any of the people included, it's the fact they are chosen as the pantheon of the top 14 people to ever in well over 100 years represent or work for Sunderland AFC. It's complete bo**ocks
