Legends Way fan vote: choose the 14 legends

I appreciate not everyone is into the history of SAFC, but the absence of the following names from this makes it a bit of a farce really.

James Allan, Johnny Campbell, Arthur Bridget, George Holley, Bobby Gurney, Charlie Buchan, Tom Watson, Ned Doug, Sandy McAlister, Dave Halliday and Johnny Mapson.

Totally agree. This was a great idea, but the club has totally messed up the execution. To have Carter as the only pre WW2 figure is a travesty considering that era was when we at times had the best team in the country/world. For most of the final 14 there is no justification for them to have a stone ahead of those you have listed. The recency bias is ridiculous. Jill Scott hardly played for Sunderland, whilst Bob Murray already has the Murray gates.

I couldn't care less to be fair. Sol has been there for nearly 30 years. Its existed for this long without it and in all that time I haven't desired or lobbied for recognition of 14 "legends" to be displayed around the stadium. Its a lovely idea but im only really arsed about 11 on the field. Its crackers to me that Gurney and Thorpe aren't there but thats recency bias and ignorance im afraid

They are just trying to put a bit of history/memory/positivity in the area, like they've done with all the flags to lampposts of memorable moments on the way to the match. They've got Kone on one of them cos he scored against Everton to keep us up for example. Not exactly legendary but a piece of our history that was positive. That is the theme of all this imo.
 
Jill Scott is laughable and I refuse to believe anyone genuinely voted for her in the numbers required. We’d not have a Tifo or a mural or a female player, why are we going all tick box and having Jill f***ing Scott

No idea. There wasn't a criteria stated for the 43. They just had 43 players who had played a part in some shape or form of Sunderland AFC. They might have thought the 43 they picked were more worthy than others. I wouldn't have picked that 43. You obviously wouldn't have. There would have been some in your 43 who I didn't think worthy, there would have been some in my 43 you wouldn't deem worthy.

Exactly this. If the club is not going to promote and educate our younger generations of fans about the players/managers that made the club the size it is today, then who else is.
Without these pre WW2 figures who created the success which in turn grew our early fanbase, we would just be a club like Southampton/Coventry/Leicester etc. with no significant history in the early game, and a much more modest modern fanbase.

That's understandable but Jill Scott wouldn't have been in one single fans 43 if they had to list it.

She was getting a stone before the voting even opened and I can't be convinced otherwise. More arsed about i'm a celebrity and her being the annoying part of the overlap rather than genuine male and female legends.

Utterly bizarre. Left Sunderland at 18 was it? 🤦‍♂️

I must admit, I'm a bit bewildered at some of these 14 names. It makes it look like we are short of genuine legends when in reality, we aren't. I can't believe Bobby Gurney didn't make the list for example.

That's your speculation. You don't know. Even if so ,I'd make a bet that lasses will have voted for Scott like.

You making that assumption because they're both female?

there's women on twitter that's complaining about Jill Scott being part of it.

Having a woman be part of the 14 is fine by me, but it should be an actual women's legend and not her. But the club gave very few other options because they'd have been desperate to put her in and get a shout out on the overlap.

I don't take what's said on Twitter with much seriousness.

Yes I am making an assumption. I'm making the assumption that some teenagers/kids etc will have voted, who are lasses, and because of that will be biased to some degree and over value Jill Scott in the rankings. Just like you are making an assumption that she was getting a stone before anyone voted. You do not know. For the record I wouldn't have had her on the list.

Why would kids/teenagers and women vote for her? Because she was on im a celebrity? Which is what i stated in the first place.

That is exactly why she should have been nowhere near the original 43 list. I really can't get my head around it whatsoever.

She's done nothing at all to warrant even any footnote in the clubs history.

For whatever reason there would be people who would have voted for her, that's my point.

You don't think she should have been on the list, that's fine, it's your view and right. The club, for whatever reason thought otherwise.
