Poveda

Granted he signed some right duds, but he didn't have the knowledge level or the contacts in the foreign market to progress us further. I guess that's almost the same thing then.

Also KLD would look at the overall picture and for much of the time we were operating at such a low level in terms of fees and wages there was always going to be judgement calls and gambles that don't come off. Just the nature of transfers, especially at that level.

Just Phil Parkinson really 😀
Ironic that hiring Gisholfi was his death knell and he should be thanked for his best signing.
His record was mixed at best.

His record was taking us from league one to the prem in less than five years without spending much more than our income thus allowing us to spend big this summer.

If that was easy, why the hell to so few teams do it?

No doubt we've upgraded his position but it's hard to argue that he didn't do a superb job in the lower leagues, you don't get promoted with a midtable wage bill unless your DOF is doing a good job. Picking up players like Ballard, Mayenda and Hume who have been useful assets for a mid table premier league team while making tens of millions through buying and selling the likes of Jobe, Stewart and Clarke is a great record, even with a poveda also on there.

I know we had to be ambitious to get Clarke / Roberts and Batth at the time and it took Neil a few months to gel it together but towards the end of the L1 season I think we were by far the best team in it. My Sheff Wed supporting colleague / friend still talks about Clarke, Stewart and Roberts at that level - it's pretty mental when you think about it in L1.

Then some of the signings like Cirkin, Batth, Pritchard, Hume at that level and decisions that were made weeding out some others.

Obviously due to limited funds there was a lot of judgement calls and it got a bit sketchy with some of the foreign buys, but we were operating at a low financial level and essentially its got us to the PL in good financial health.

His record was L1 to PL on a budget far less than Brum or Wrexham have likely spent over the last couple of seasons.

There's always going to be transfers that don't work out - it'll happen to us in the PL too. But there's only so much homework you can do when you're fishing for 500k to 1m kids that haven't played senior games or trying to unearth a gem from Ukraine or France's second tier for a couple of million.

If we hadn't progressed quickly then there's probably aome of the so called flops who could adequately play Championship level.
