Legends Way fan vote: choose the 14 legends

Had one season in our first team.
Yes, I know.

My reply was in agreement with a post describing Jordan Henderson, who had 2 seasons in our first team when we did nothing of note, but did well after he left.

Exactly the same criteria that appears to have got Jill Scott a place on the legends walk of fame

Do an image search of "Jill Scott Footballer Sunderland" on google, and there's not even a picture of her in our strip ffs.

Do an imagine search of Jill Scott playing for Sunderand, and there's still not one single picture of her.

What an absolute farce.
I thought I'd found one but it's actually her playing for Man City against Sunderland 🤣

I'm not saying I agree with the choices, but if it's been the result of a fan vote then surely it's fair enough.

Scott, Reid, Defoe and Murray shouldn't be on there - the whole stadium is Murray's legacy. Fair enough wanting to honour people while they're alive but add in stones for Doig and Gurney at least. If Bennett is in then Ashurst should be.
Spurs fans cheered Defoe, says it all really.

They probably think how shit we must be if one of their legends (probably doesn't even make theirs but has more claim) makes it on our list of most legendary players ever when he barely played for us.

Well Reid and Defoe were not even available to vote for so what do you think?

of course they were

Defoe and Jill Scott should be nowhere near. Absolute insanity. Full credit to Defoe for what he did with Bradley, but let's be real about it....none of the seasons he played for us will ever be memorable in future. He scored a brilliant goal against Newcastle, and that's about it. We won nothing, we got relegated, and he left. We finished 16th, 17th, and 20th in his seasons. He shouldn't even have been in the vote.

Yep. If scoring a great goal against Newcastle is enough then David Vaughan should be on the list. Looks like no-one really agrees with this selection so hopefully we'll see some changes or additions.

They might have been better off trying to pick one legend for each decade:

Allan
Doig
Holley
Buchan
Gurney
Carter
Shackleton
Anderson
Hurley
Kerr
Rowell
 Phillips
Quinn
Catts/O'Shea
Luke

There was always going to be a large amount of recency bias when you give it to a public vote. It you'd done this 30 years ago John Kay probably would've got in.

I don't agree with half of the list, the fact that multiple title winners, including the likes of Gurney, Buchan, Doig and Campell didnt make it is pretty depressing. Bob Murray in over James Allan is also a big shame. I don't know what is is with SAFC, but we consistently fail to recognise the 50 year period when we were one of the biggest clubs in the world, yet we're happy to poor nostalgia over our relatively terrible post war teams.

In reality they should've given this to the club historian to decide.

I think this is why a fan survey was always a really thick idea though. Recency bias/ name recognition is always gonna get in the way. I appreciate this is very much "old man shouting at cloud" of me, but anyone with half a brain saw this coming from as soon as they announced it. You're never going to get the older players through a straight vote - as nobody has heard of half of them (even if they're far more worthy).

If we can't shout about out 6 League Titles and 2 FA Cups then literally nobody else will. Then we wonder why it's just 1973 brought up time and time again by the media, and you get fans from poxy clubs like Wigan, Portsmouth etc. who seem to think they're as big as us when we're in the same league as them.

As always with SAFC, it's a good idea but terribly terribly executed.
