Legends Way fan vote: choose the 14 legends

Bob Murray was a surprise inclusion tbh.

Buchan should have been in there. Absolute legend.
Buchan
Halliday
Cochrane
Tom Watson
Gurney
Doing
Allan.

All should have been absolute certainties.

The club should have just looked at lists of most appearances, most goals, most clean sheets, most medals and trophies won etc and chosen from those. It really wasn't difficult

It just seems baffling Buchan won't be on there. All time top goalscorer and decorated war hero. Fighting in three of the most bloodiest battles in world war 1 and surviving. He should have a statue.

He's a legend of national football let alone us. The more I think of it I'm annoyed by this. I know I shouldn't be 🤣.

SAFC has an illustrious history being ignored.

Plus I paid to have a stone next to a legend. Now it could be next to Reid or Jill Scott ffs

Exactly this. It’s an abomination some of the names that have made it. Jill Scott 😂😂😂. Someone’s pushing a narrative.
Jill Scott is a surprise but its not much of a surprise if you have daughters who are football mad. So I think thats why she is there.
Get a grip. Is she a Sunderland legend? One season in the women’s team 20 years ago. What about Henderson and Pickford if we are looking at outside of safc.

Some embarrassing picks there, why they should let a panel of experts pick. Buchan, Allan, Doig Halliday, Gurney glaring omissions.

Reid, Defoe, Scott, Murray? Ahead of the man that literally founded the club and our record ever goal scorer. Madness
Our top scorer and top league scorer Buchan and Gurney (one being a local lad) excluded from our legends stones in favour of Jill Scott, who played a couple of years for the women's team when she was a kid. Makes a mockery of the whole thing.

Murray already has the Murray Gates (and was disliked for long periods when he was chairman, protested against and eventually chased out the club). Loved the Reid years, but never won owt, and not a legend on the scale of others. Defoe a big fan, but surely not up there with Cloughie and Halliday etc.

Good idea. Badly executed. Should have just had Rob Mason pick them.

At the outset, if the club had given a little bit of a description/explanation into the reasoning behind the people included on their shortlist it would have been helpful and given some insight into the kind of criteria we were meant to be taking into account.

As it stands, it is hard not to conclude that at least some of those involved in the club’s shortlisting process either lacked the knowledge to be able to do it competently and/or didn’t put any great thought into it and/or arbitrarily included random criteria. That would explain the apparent lack of logic/consistency in the shortlist the club came up with.

If Rob Mason (no one would have been better qualified to do so) had chosen the shortlist and given a brief summary/explanation of the facts as to why each person on that list potentially deserved to be considered as a SAFC Legend, it would have meant that supporters of all ages voting would have known at least something about the people on the list who were before their time supporting SAFC.

Instead, and perhaps inevitably, what we have apparently ended up with is a bit of a mish mash of players who are historically and factually genuine legends, popular players from relatively recent times, and random people who have never played for the club.

Bottom line: This should have simply been players who have played for SAFC.

Absolute shit show

Did Jill scott play any first team game for the club?

Doesn't look like it from what I've searched
Aye but she won that Jungle thing with Ant and Dec

(Crikey! Surely not? Someone needs to step in. I'd rather have nowt at all, than tell people Jill Scott is one of our all time legends, despite never playing first team football for the girl's team)
