Could Leicester go bust?

Not quite as all 20 teams voted for the rule change but that came into effect in 2019/20, 3 seasons later. It was first raised in 2017 with more money to higher finishing teams but the vote failed but Leicester were one of the ones agreeing with the original proposal before it eventually changed when all agreed in 2019/20 to a fairer split.

The new Overseas split was a base payment (£43.2m below) with some based on merit (Increase column below). Even so, it wasn't a huge change as winners Liverpool got £73.1m and 5th place Leicester got £67.1m.

Even recently, it's just over £800,000 per place with top getting £78.3m and 7th getting £71.3m

Leicester's downfall had nowt to do with that change, it's more they couldn't maintain the high spending and wages chasing the Champions League. They got close as they finished 5th in 2019/20 and 2020/21 and in both seasons they were top 3 for a long period. With just 2 games left in both, they 4th and 3rd buy twice they lost the last 2 games costing them Champions League places and big money.

Aye I never said the downfall was down to that change btw, it was down to them playing billy big bollocks and signing shite. The difference wasnt that much at the time but its the overseas deal thats getting bigger every year, I'm sure if you look at the first year and last year the difference is even bigger now, the top clubs knew this and thats why they wanted the change.

Ah, it was more your comment about the big 6 as if they brought it in, just like PSR was brought in to protect big 6 etc.

Football is fucked and has been for a while as any team that tries to close the gap to the top teams will fail in time as there isn't enough seats at the table for everyone now. That's what happened to Leicester as they tried to keep up with the big boys but it eventually caught up with them. Similar happened to Blackburn in the 90s, and Leeds (albeit they didn't win the league again) and even the mags in 2000s as they all spent big chasing the dream, failed to maintain high finishes and ended up in financial shit. As did other clubs who didn't even get anywhere and this is why the likes of PSR etc all exist as it's to stop careless owners just running clubs well beyond their means and stepping away but leaving a club in a mess for the fans to suffer.

Leicester eventually failed as their revenue plummets more (percentage wise) in a bad season with the performance based and prize money. It's happening with Aston Villa and the Mags now as they simply don't have the global following to close the revenue gap that is boosted by match day and commercial for the big clubs.

Football had grown massively globally since say 2010 and there's numerous clubs now (including European) with massive 'fan' bases all around the world. I think Leicester still are the 7th most PL followed team globally and well ahead the rest but I'd dare say some have long jumped ship in recent seasons. All global 'fans' will be ones watching the TV or social media interactions etc and that's what the sponsors/ads pay the big teams big money for and how the make loads more revenue commercially.

The mags shirt sponsors are artificial as they're self sponsored with Sela & Noon. If the Saudis left then there's no way the mags would get the same sponsor money from a normal sponsor. The mags can't compete in buying top players and paying the top wages, especially needing a bigger squad to play loads more games. As the Saudis can't 'cheat' and won't even invest legitimately like they could then they will continue to be a stepping stone for any player that could be a player in a top team.

If they, like many of their deluded fans want, keep chasing the dream they need to be selling top players for profits but then replacing the quality lost without spending more. Leicester were OK a few seasons but they lost too many 'good' players to bigger teams. The mags could well end up in the financial shit again if they don't get Champions League any time soon, same goes for Villa but they're looking good for this season.

Thankfully it seems our owner is doing it sensibly and whatever happens happens. At least we aren't throwing money away at journeymen, nor overpaying in desperation for players like the mags last season chasing the big money Champions League. The Champions League is only going to grow and in time will probably be bigger financially than PL prize money meaning more money for teams that get into it regularly, which is turn is fucked as that is also coefficent based now.

It's just a shame that realistically we won't ever win the league and can probably only dream of winning one of the cups. I can't see another freak season where all the other teams had a bad season and we somehow get a team that just clicks.

We slid down into league 1 without getting anywhere near those trophies during our last spell in the Premier league where we were perennial hangers on.

Would swap their history for ours in recent memory in a heartbeat.

If someone promised us, today, we could win the league but then have to fight for survical a decade later we'd snatch their hands off.

Just read their form and I’m surprised to see a few of their fans admit what I’ve thought all along. A massive part of their PL win was a whirlwind luck and unbelievable timing.

NP stumbled across an absolutely mental play until you vomit out your spleen tactic, coupled with the fact that they managed to find about 5-6 unknown cheap gems and add a season where the traditional top 4 had their shittest PL seasons in years.
