Harrison Jones To Leave Club

He really should of took the opportunity of a couple of loan moves that came his way in the last couple seasons. 21 year olds shouldn’t be playing u21 football against 17/18 year old kids. Far to happy to sit in his comfort zone at the academy and now he’s potentially 50/60 first team games behind in his development

Less than 1% of elite academy players will make it at the top level, Harrison Jones leaving doesn’t discount the good work being done.
Rigg is years younger and already a fixture in the team as he has the ability others dont
How many professional footballers are we producing?

Look at Spurs as an example we have 2 of theirs in our 1st team squad

quite a few over the last few years, however the club progressing so much in a short period of time has made the like of Patto/Gooch/Neil victims of their own success and they couldn’t push on to the next level.

We recruited Cirkin & Mundle from Spurs when we were lower in the football pyramid as they weren’t good enough for Spurs at that time. They probably aren’t good enough to have a long term future here either now if things go as they are.

That’s how academy’s tend to work, you get one every five or so years who’s good enough for the top level, but for the most part they provide players for clubs lower down the leagues I.e Diamond, Taylor etc

You are going long way back to include Gooch. The football league isn't littered with players from our Academy.

A good Academy produces professional footballers, no only for its first team but to have careers in the game. Certainly something to improve on

Gooch only left in 23 after the first championship season it’s hardly ancient history.

99% of players don’t make it professionally so I wouldn’t expect the FL to be chocker with Sunderland academy players

Remember that our previous owners neglected the academy and sold off promising players from it. That set our system back by years. It's definitely going in the right direction under the current regime.

And there are a good few players from across several years who've been through our academy system at some point in the EFL and Scottish league. Examples like Josh Coburn, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Michael Spellman, Josh Hawkes.

Tippy Tappy is on its way out and good riddance if you ask me.

Awful boring possession based football.
Whether it's boring or not is beside the point here.

Isn't it that players need to be confronted with "full" professionals, not just age group level, when they get to around 19-21? You can try to play "tippy tappy" if you wish

Gooch is 30 mate. He made his debut when we were last in the PL

I have noticed that our players tend to go out on loan way later than others from PL academies?

Anyone with any more experience of the u21s know why this is?

I get that. I'm a massive advocate of the Academy, have been for years. I do though think we don't produce enough and certainly not competitors

It definitely needs addressing. Been better this season mind.

I've alway said max 18 months at u21 level. By the age of 19 lads need to be out playing mens football

So the academy produced a first team footballer then?

They probably just aren’t good enough in the last few year groups. as mentioned the previous regime sold off the best ones and neglected the running of the academy, that generation is coming of age now.
It’s not really the responsibility of lower league sides to take our players at a detriment to themselves
