The lad should have been out playing mens football 18 months ago.

Who's going to take a chance on him with barely any senior football to his name apart from some glorified friendlies at the end of last season.

I've been saying for a while now the lack of accountability our u18 / u21s doesn't help produce senior footballers. There really needs to be a larger emphasis on winning at that level.

See your point definitely, but there is also Ellis Taylor who played very few games for Pools at senior level on loan and was released in a similar scenario and is now doing very well at Harrogate, could go both ways. Good luck to the lad.

Was always going to be a lot tougher for the young uns to get their chance once we moved into the Prem. Hopefully the experience of playing with top level footballers in training has helped him and I'm sure he will find a club he can get regular games at so he can find his level.

Given he was one of the lads one step away from getting on the pitch every week and he was not deemed worth offering a contract to, what does it say about the rest of the under 21s and the pathway?

Its a shame. He was really highly regarded at a young age with Liverpool keen. Unfortunately a serious injury took him out for nearly two years. Just goes to show how important continual development is key. He is really close to being a really good player. Hopefully he goes on to have a good career. He's probably the same level as Honeyman who did indeed have a good career.

The reality is that most clubs have eyes on only one or two players in their U18s or U21s and everyone else in the academy are making up the numbers around those players.

I do feel like there's been a switch in attitude in recent years to this though - and i think there's more of an effort being made to find young lads loans. Young (Salford), Ogunsuyi (Falkirk/Shrewsbury), Tutierov (Exeter), Johnson (York) have all had the chance this year to try and develop. They tried to find Abdullahi a loan as well, i think Bristol City were strongly linked. I'm probably missing a couple.

For the academy to work well you ideally don't want your best prospects playing 21s football unless they've been injured and need minutes to build fitness

Slightly off topic, but I'd like to see reserve team football brought back. Players like Harrison would have a lot more exposure to playing against fully developed men, and the men not playing regularly for the first team would still have competitive run outs.

Inevitable really.....if the likes of Dan Neil, Patto and Roberts couldnt get a sniff at first team level then Harrison wasnt going to either. Hopefully he has learned a lot from working with Granit Xhaka this last season and goes on to have a great career

It's like listening to a parrot, do you really think lower league teams still play hoof ball on mud pies? The vast majority of teams from the Premier League to non league play 'tippy tappy football' and play it out from the back. I watch the under 21's regularly and Murty is always demanding accountability, asking them why they played that pass, why weren't they in a better position to receive the ball, why they haven't communicated properly with each other etc. I agree that playing regular men's football at a young age is better for development in the long run but it's got to be the right opportunity. I'd wager that Jones will have no problem finding a professional football where he'll get ample game time, he'll have benefitted loads this year from training with elite level players and being around matchday squads.

Even if we use your results driven metric, it's a bizarre comment, because since Murty, Nichols etc game in our performances and results have been night and day. Our youth set-up is in great hands.

Used him as one example of someone who came out of that and is progressing.

I agree that lads should be out getting minutes on loan where possible but you can only send them out to the EFL if teams are willing to take them.

Some of the U21 lads end up out at Northern PL teams towards the back end of the season, believe 3 are currently at Whitby Town that was done on the week of the reg deadline.

At a guess, for a Cat 1 academy I'd say pretty low. Fine with keepers though

Less than 1% of elite academy players will make it at the top level, Harrison Jones leaving doesn’t discount the good work being done.
Rigg is years younger and already a fixture in the team as he has the ability others dont
