Sunderland railway station.

That's what most people have said for ages, that the rent should have been lowered to allow local businesses which is what the area needed

Now we are in a situation where the only type of businesses that will move in are betting shops

It seems crazy that it's just been left empty rather than have money coming in
National or Multinationals is what you need at a provincial cities gateway. Let strangers know they’ve not dropped off the end of the world.

I broadly agree - although I like to see local businesses given a chance too - but I don’t think we should get distracted with this detail.

Surely getting businesses in, whether local or national, providing a public service and a better first impression rather than the current desolation, is the only key concern?

A M&S and a Pret would be my ideal though!
A fcuking betting shop in a brand new train station.

That end of the town is a disgrace.
There are bright spots for travellers - there’s a Cafe Nero, a Tesco Express, Pho 179 and a cracking Oriental Food Store (Fawcett Street) within 1 minute walk.

Turns out that a few stations have bookies, even the well healed environs of Chester, just past the cafe here.

But I am quite sure it would be the only station where the  only retail outlet was a bookies.

I was waiting outside the station for about 20 minutes the other afternoon and couldn't believe the number of utter scruffs that had set up residence directly outside. I'm all for supporting people who have fallen on hard times but these knackers were like flies around shit. Must have been 20 of them and they all knew each other. The police turned up twice, they knew the main culprits by name and moved them on very politely. They all shook hands, dispersed amicably then were back within minutes of the police leaving the area. Shouting and bawling at each other from across the street, pissed on stella and generally making the area directly outside the station really unpleasant. This was lunchtime on Tuesday.

I honestly don't know what the answer is but it really give off an awful impression of our city to any visitors. I have also just read that from 6pm, security lock most of the doors and lock the toilets so visitors have to ask their permission to use the disabled toilets because that end of the town is crawling with knackers that can't behave. Appalling.

It's not really directly relevant to the thread, but Durham bus station is this. Entrance to the city for plenty of visitors. Some sort of dispersal order in place for drinking, drugs, urinating, ASB

Police van outside yesterday. Could see the gang lurking in doorways and slightly up a side street. Copper having a bit crack and laugh with an elderly couple. Presumably they can't do anything unless they catch someone in the act and they'd all be back circling as soon as the van went anyway

So that's not the answer for Durham or Sunderland huh. As a side note, Park Lane bus station ain't no better. So, there is no answer?

I know they have a problem with a young lass basically trying to live in the disabled (might be wrang) toilet at Park Lane toilets.

I see it on a daily basis , sitting drinking and causing trouble. Unsure what powers the police have but if drinking in a public area should be moved away

Don't know what the answer is , used to be a big issue in sunniside but that's gotten a lot better in the last 18 months

Bigger societal problem - Stockton town centre is exactly the same, but what do you do with these people? Its shit but they are a lost cause

I've been to Stockton regularly and seen. It was bad. It's the lurking around public spaces, public transport places, and shopping areas that's the problem.

But if they got moved on say went and sat at home they can't beg, rob, harass and meet up with like-minded people

Think it's a lost cause and another 10 years when it gets worse still, and am in my 60s I'll just stop going out

It's the same in every city...homeless people begging congregate around areas where there are a lot of commuters / foot fall.

It's indicative of a decline in society as a whole rather than an issue specific to Sunderland...
