Drinking in Sunderland City Centre - restored

Called into the mountain daisy on sunday for the first time since Sunday and i was impressed, had a bottle of double maxim but they also had it on cask as well. Few in but fairly quiet however good to see the place open. Had a walk around to the back bar and its absolutely stunning. The food smelt outstanding as well, can imagine it being quite authentic. Good luck to them

Went in a few weeks ago, not many in Just had a drink at the bar , hope it survives, it was close to falling into the hands of property developers , watched the derby in the free gardeners arms , first time I had been in for a couple of years, been done out , decent pub to watch the game

I can’t see through walls. The pubs must have been rammed because there wasn’t a soul walking the streets
I think that's what a few were saying in the thread. Admittedly it was a bit weird. Mid afternoon to early evening (when we were out) streets round the bars were a ghost town. But the bars (we went in 5 before leaving at 7.30) were all busy

Big news for our locals 👇

"We’re excited to announce that Just Pubs are taking over the William Jamesons 🍻

First things first - the name is staying the same, and so are the prices 💸
But we’re bringing you more choice behind the bar with a wider range of brands 🍺

Over the next few months, you’ll also notice:
📺 More TVs added with Sky Sports & TNT Sports
🎨 A gradual refresh of the venue throughout
🧠 Plans for quiz nights coming soon
⚽ We’re also looking to support local sports teams - get in touch!

A big difference with us:
This site is free of tie, meaning we’re not connected to any pub company or brewery - giving us the freedom to bring you better variety and value.

(For those who know us - yes, we also run The Chester’s, which is tied to Stonegate - but this venue is completely independent.)

We’re looking forward to building something great here with the community. Come down, say hello, and be part of it 🙌"

It might as well just be staying as it is then. Same name, same prices, therefore same locals. How underwhelming

Just saw a Daily Express article about the the closure of the WJ. It implies it’s been a public for over 100 years.

“And there are plenty of people both shocked and gutted that The William Jameson is going. Dating back to the 19th century, the pub is named after William Jameson, the man responsible for laying out Sunderland's famous Fawcett Street for the Fawcett family.”

I thought it used to be Binns. Was there a pub there before Spoons?

As far as I'm aware it was never a pub. Current building went up after the war (predecessor was bombed).

Didn't have you down as an Express reader. Do you get it for the crossword?
