I think there's a bit of that and a bit of "sign here as we have a pathway to the first team for you", amidst the reported interest from other clubs.

Looks like the lad has options. Could probably sign for a Champions League club U21's and earn more in the short term but be further away from the first team. Or could earn less by dropping a level and playing first team football with a view to progressing and getting a move back up the ladder.

No doubt loads of clubs are offering him all sorts of guarantees. At least, in Rigg, he can see an example of how Sunderland develop players. Hope he stays as he looks to have high potential.
