He got a lot of grief even back then for his direct approach and calculations but I am seeing it starting to come back in to some degree. The most obvious indicator being the long throw. Either way, I should have mentioned previous, Brobey is the perfect player for any if this.

I don't think it ever really went away to be honest. Didn't Pulis adopt pretty much the samr style at Stoke ?

Lost 3-0 at Abbey against him. Was beginning of the end fot Denis Smith after he played Benno up front in the match. Sacked a couple of months later.

Think they used to grow the grass longer in the corners of the pitch so the ball would hold up better after a big launch upfield. Steve Claridge's autobiography is a good read, especially the bits about Cambridge, John Beck seemed like a bit of a character!!

Very much likely. I just remember him stating his objectives quite clearly on Saint and Greavsy, they must have made the FA cop later rounds or such like.

Back then footballing sides would pass it back to the keeper. He'd pick it up, roll it out to a defender. The back four would fanny around amongst thenselves until eventually passing it back to the keeper who would pick it up and roll it out to a free defender. The cycle would start over. This would go on until the keeper eventually launched it. In the late 80s and early 90s all the long ball was doing was getting rid of tedious foreplay.
