Legends Way fan vote: choose the 14 legends

As stated in previous posts I think number should be increased to 20, perhaps places being held back for glaring omissions.
Bit worried voting goes like the Roker End vote that pleased some disappointed others.
For me players like Irwin, Ashurst and Armstrong played a lot but were average players so don’t merit legend status but others might think differently. Similarly Todd was my favourite player but his achievements were elsewhere.
Suggestion for missing names - Arthur Bridgett, Patsy Gallacher.

My choices were:
Doig, Mapson, Allan
Anderson, Watson (D), Hurley, Rowell
Shack, Carter, Holley, Buchan
Halliday, Quinn, Gurney

Rowell was probably heart ruling head. I went initially for Willie Watson, but changed my mind.

If we were including non-playing staff, I'd have nominated Billy Williams, our long serving trainer.

I would have done it as 15 'legends' and 5 current 'legends' that way Pickford and Henderson could have been on there along with maybe O'Nien, Ballard and Watson too. I dunno I guess there's loads of ways they could have done this and everyone would have their favourites.

This thread made me go look at the all time records for appearances for our players...lots of these legends didn't play that many games for us, some under 70.

Anyway, I'd add Marco and John Kay to the list, both iconic players at the time.

Julia Arca would be another I'd consider

Filled out mine, cheers.

Bit odd there’s no Jermain Defoe there for two reasons: 1) That goal against the mags and 2) The bond he made with Bradley Lowery

No issue with the lasses being there personally. Have a feeling either Jill Scott or Steph Houghton are going to make the final cut.

Under what criteria does Gary Bennett appear in this “Legends” shortlist ahead of, for example, Shaun Elliott?

Gary Bennett
Total League Starts for SAFC in the top 2 divisions: 324
Top Division: 74 (Won 16 Drawn 20 Lost 38)
Second Division: 250 (Won 88 Drawn 60 Lost 102)

Shaun Elliott
Total League Starts for SAFC in the top 2 divisions: 316
Top Division: 177 (Won 57 Drawn 52 Lost 68)
Second Division: 139 (Won 57 Drawn 42 Lost 40)

So Bennett and Elliott played virtually the same number of games in the top 2 divisions for SAFC but Elliott played a much higher percentage of those games in the top division than Bennett and also had a higher percentage of wins in both divisions than Bennett.

Off the field, Bennett clocked up multiple arrests and convictions for drink driving, assault etc during his time at SAFC. This included hitting a police woman in the face and kicking her in the shin for which he received a three-month suspended prison sentence.

At no time do I recall Elliott ever being arrested or bringing any sort of bad publicity to the club.

Just posted this in the Legend's Way thread but maybe deserves its own:

They are asking us to vote on the 14 legends to be represented along the line:

Opportunity to recognise older legends from our real golden eras before our lifetimes IMO.

Shortlist (though there is an opportunity to nominate others once you have submitted):

I think they should’ve just put the 3/4 lasses on who have represented the club and played for England at the highest level and had best careers
Scott, houghton, bronze and mead for example. Just left it off the vote. Be very hard fot them to win a vote when 90% off the fan base are men’s team oriented

I would vote for players like Pickford, Henderson and Defoe before any of the lasses simply because I have zero interest in woman's football.

It feels like they want to add some lasses for a token gesture but in the grand scheme of SAFC's history and our big moments - none of them should genuinely make the cut.

If they were to build a separate area to commemorate the Woman's team and history that would make far more sense.

A must on any list, a true legend, hero and superstar on and off the pitch
Leigh Richmond Roose.
He changed goalkeeping forever, in Sunderlands greatest ever result, served in Galipoli as a medical orderly.
Then joined the army and served on the Somme, rescued injured soldiers and was last seen charging a German machine gun.
His body was never found, his name is misspelt on Thieval memorial.
This would be a dreadful error to leave out this real legend.

Also Johhny Cochrane, Hugh Wilson and Patsy Gallacher, Tom Watson and Arthur Bridgett.

Young, Gray, Bennett, Ball and Scott seriously ?
Whoever come up with that list must have gone AWOL
