How’s that’s like, when he came in to Mercedes he didn’t come close to overshadowing George…in fact George was way ahead 2 win and 9 podiums to 3 for Kimi..we are 3 races in and in this race even toto acknowledged they fucked up George’s car.

He’s a talent no doubt but its a close 2 horse race…..

I'm giving him a year pass because he was 18 and a debutant. Senna had a year in a Toleman first, Verstappen two in a Minardi, Hamilton was a true debutant but had had more years in the junior formulae than Antonelli.

Will end up potentially Russell in a situation to Damon hill in 96. Frank Williams terminated his contract mid season and opted to keep the far less experienced Villeneuve for 97, was extra motivation for hill to win what he knew would likely be his only shot at a title, which he stepped up to.

I foresee an exact same scenario here.

Only difference is hill was/is a far more likeable bloke than Russell.

There's absolutely no reason for Merc to change mid season. Max will be far too far behind by that point to challenge for the WDC
 
Sometimes it's just a case of breaking the duck, getting a bit of luck, and that confidence breeds more success and gets in the other driver's head.

And Russell seems the sort of tetchy, thin skinned, overemotional, victim-playing bloke who'd be ever so easy to get in the head of.

At that point, you're done, you can't ever get it back. And it brings a whole team with you.

It destroyed Alonso, it destroyed Ricciardo, Brundle drifted after 1992. Within a season, it was the other guy's team.

De Angelis lost his seat after 1985 and felt the team had already switched their focus mainly to Senna. This is what confident, precocious and likeable drivers do, without even trying. The tide turns, the guard changes, the resentment starts a spiral begins.

Cola looked to have driven him off the road though, from what I saw. Didn't even get as far as the stewards though, so maybe not.

I haven't said this before, but I did wonder if they'd be better off halving the electrical output so that it can deploy twice as often - if anything it could lower lap time, although also knock top speed back a touch.

Actually I think that's totally reasonable.
The team had clearly planned and practiced this, so why wouldn't they do exactly what they planned to do. Russel was in P3, so knowing when Kimi was going to leap could have helped the team get a 1-2 finish.
He also has every right to get a bit annoyed about the SC timing - he's racing flat out and caught a massive slap of bad luck.
Let's not get carried away with the George bashing?

Decent enough race overall. These regs are allowing overtaking and wheel to wheel battles. Everyone focussing on the negatives and totally missing the good parts.

And of course, now that Max isn't winning, he's threatening to quit - we've been saying that would happen on here for a couple of years now. No surprise, he's been pretty open that he didn't want to just keep racing in F1 forever.

And potentially Russell follows the Hill route in joining a back marker with big ambitions in Aston Martin if Alonso gets fed up ?! Certainly can’t see Russell at Red Bull
 
After this morning I honestly think the sport needs this massive break before the next race. Time for the rulemakers to sit down and come up with a solution and tell the teams what is happening rather than letting them decide

I''m thinking it might be a good idea to knock the split from 55/45 to 60/40 (i.e. a slightly low deployment limit, but for longer time per lap) - I imagine that's a fairly simple change that would be easy for everyone to implement and won't change too much, but would reduce some of the issues and risks we've seen.

Longer term, perhaps the ONLY time you should be able to deploy battery manually is when in Overtake mode (ie new DRS). That way nobody will unexpectedly run out of battery and cause huge closing speeds.
 
Verstappen, Norris, Piastri, Sainz all complaining about the battery and harvesting today.

Would it be too simple to just sack off the battery deployment for the rest of the season and bring in something like DRS or Kers

Yes, the ICE engines won't have enough power. But my suggestions above could in theory be done - no manual deployment, only a press to overtake if you trigger the overtake mode. And no engine to battery charging at all.

Do the regs allow more wheel to wheel battles? It feels to me like most of the overtakes are just due to battery deployment and people are breezing past. It doesn't feel like the drivers are fighting for it to me.

It could well be sour grapes for Max but he's making the same points a lot of unhappy fans seem to be making.

Plenty will jump on the ‘he wouldn’t be saying that if he had the best car’ and I suspect success would lead to not being quite as vocal, but he has for a couple of years now been clear for him there is more to life than F1, seems to want more family time whilst trying out other things

2 ways of answering that I suppose. The cars are going past and re-past eachother, so I suppose that is wheel to wheel racing.
But also, the cars do seem to be able to follow eachother quite closely lap on lap now.

They can follow closely and the are passing and re-passing but it just feels cheap to me. I want to see drivers being brave and having to fight to overtake but at the moment it seems they just press a boost button and it's not a fight. And sometimes the person they passed does the same and takes it back. It just doesn't feel earned to me.

You could say the same with the DRS button. I really didn't like how you could press that 3 times every lap if you were coming through from the back of the pack. It was a huge bonus for failure.
