Mervyn Hardy RIP

Just learned at the cricket today that Mervyn Hardy the Magistrate died in February aged 81. MCC member, Leader of the Deckchair Casuals, genuine character and Durham diehard.
Marty comment
“He had an amazing ability to email during commentary just as things were about to change in matches. If a batsman was doing well and he emailed to offer praise, you could bet your bottom dollar he’d be out as I was reading the email on air. If things were going badly he’d be equally vociferous in his views, only for a record stand to begin.

“I will miss his MCC hat and cable knit sweater on the boundary. He was certainly a character.”
Anyone hear of his reaction to Bostock reference to "Luddites" .

Condolences to his wife Pat who helped out in the bookshop and his family.
I don't think Hardy was his surname however I think it was something different.
Bye Bye Judge field well in big field of dreams in heaven mate.
Gareth Batty will no longer be in terror if he visits the Riverside ever again
I know at the end of last season he had several serious hospital appointments and I was hoping to see him again when we said our goodbyes last year
Sadly that's not going to be the case.

He was always referred to as Hardy whenever Mike Amos used to mention him in his Northern Echo articles.

You could well be correct but I do know him as another surname in the back of my mind
He didn't take fools gladly and had a particular dislike of Alex Hayles and James Taylor and others in his little black book
He wasn't fond of Yorkshire either after they took away his life membership
He used to shout at the opposition fielders " LET IT GAN"
Fair enough if I am wrong about his surname but we do mean the same fella who was ardent in his support

I had a good chat with him just before play on the final day of the Worcs game last season. Reminisced about the Durham legends of the Minor county days and he told me and Mrs RT when he became a life member of Durham in the late 60s (think he paid 10 guineas!)

He wasn't too complimentary about Durham's season both on and off the pitch so God only knows what his thoughts were on the Headingley capitulation.

Said hello a couple of times but for me he was one of those "regular faces" who you just knew were Durham through & through and had been for absolutely decades. I guess one of those characters that makes Durham and red ball cricket what it is., just an all round top member/supporter/man. Instantly recognisable walking round the ground with his jumper and MCC colours/hat. We've lost a couple of loyal fans over the winter with another member sadly knocked over in Brandon a couple of months ago (it was mentioned on here at the time). Sadly it happens, we've lost some good members in recent years which itself is sad as some I've got to know well and learnt so so much from about cricket and general stuff and advice I'd always treasure. RIP Mervyn and condolences to your family and friends.
