SMB Film Thread 2026

You'd think there'd be some lawsuits if the whole mess was exaggerated to that extreme. Wonder what McCarthy thinks of his portrayal?
They do push the point it's a fictional account based on events in a couple of interviews I've seen.

Aye they basically make it look like a stag do.

There was one night in the pub with all the journos but they weren't sitting around drinking all day.

And the training set up was bad but not that bad.

Also probably most importantly the climax in the film with Keane calling him an English c**t did not happen.

Drowning By Numbers (1988) 8/10
In my early 20s I was a massive fan of Peter Greenaway. Not seen anything by him for a couple of decades. The style is as distinctive as I remember, and also more fun - this one playfully distributes numbers in each scene to count up from 1 to 100.

Two Prosecutors (2025) 8/10
Tense drama set in Stalin's Russia in which a young prosecutor investigates allegations made by a political prisoner. Largely filmed in an actual Soviet prison in Latvia.

L'Africain (1982) 4/10
Incredibly dated French comedy. Catherine Deneuve travels to Zaire to set up a Club Med in the wilderness. Her ex-husband, Philippe Noiret, is a local pilot determined to stop her. The two stars are on top form, but it's one of the most racist films I've ever seen.

3 Denzels I haven't seen before:

Out of Time [2003] 6/10

By-the-numbers thriller that telegraphs every twist.

2 Guns [2013] 6/10

As far as brainless buddy action movies go, it's decent. The problem is, it thinks it's clever.

Virtuosity [1995] 3/10

Virtuoshitty. They spent the entire budget on the cast and none of it on the special effects.

Have you seen De Ja Vu?
Apologies if I asked you this before. Love his films and enjoyed that one v

Saipan (2025) - 5/10 - Pretty lame budget movie showing the events between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy leading to the former leaving the Irish Squad ahead of the 2002 World Cup. Interesting to see just how bad it all was (I'm assuming it's reasonably accurate despite the disclaimer at the start). McCarthy's portrayal was odd. I know Coogan doesn't just like to impersonate characters as such in movies but I couldn't get away with his portrayal of McCarthy. Perhaps that was to do with the script but he comes across as inept and clueless. I'm not sure he was quite as bad in real life. Occasionally Coogan would drop into his Stan Laurel expressions! The guy playing Keane did an OK job I thought. If it wasn't for the subject matter this would be consigned to the dustbin I think.
Yes pointless film

Denzel has done a lot of crap films.

Saint Jack (1979) 8/10
Peter Bogdanovich's adaptation of Paul Theroux's novel, capturing Singapore just before its transition from seedy tropical outpost to modern metropolis. Ben Gazzara is excellent in the title role, supported by the likes of Denholm Elliott, Rodney Bewes, Joss Ackland and George Lazenby.

The Clockmaker of Saint Paul (l'Horloger de Saint Paul) (1974) 10/10
Philippe Noiret as a clockmaker in Lyon whose son goes on the run after committing a murder. Brilliant film from Bertrand Tavernier. Lyon looks spectacular. One of the best explorations I've seen about the impact of a crime on the family of the perpetrator.

A Week's Vacation (Une Semaine de Vacances) (1980) 7/10
Another Tavernier film set in Lyon. A school teacher takes a week off work to reassess her life. Slow, rambling, but Philippe Noiret makes a great cameo repeating his role from the previous film.

How to Make a Killing [2026] 6/10
A Kind Hearts and Coronets remake that isn't funny or vicious enough. Margaret Qualley was in a different movie to everyone else.

Absolutely as mad as the title suggests.

I’m not really into musicals as a rule, but this one just works — pure 80s chaos from start to finish and somehow it lands.

Proper hidden gem as well. One of those “if you know, you know” films that feel like they shouldn’t be this entertaining

Free to watch on YouTube too.

8.5/10

Last nigh I watched *Mercy" and "Warmachine" both are reasonable watches but for me these both fall into the 1990s bracket. Hard to explain.
