O'Nien

Crap pass don't get me wrong but the idea that both the manager and the captain were telling our rookie keeper making his third start to pass the ball out short to a lad who hadn't started at centre half in the league all season in the opening ten minutes with them pressing us incredibly high man to man instead of going long to probably the strongest centre forward in the league was nuts to me.

He was trying to go long. He slipped

He's flawed, not perfect but the lad has heart. He could have easily folded after that mistake, but kept going . The physical embodiment of our resurgence
Thing with o9 is that he's a smart lad and a grafter.

He's always improving and working on his game, which is why I imagine RLB has started utilising him again. I'd love to compare him now to when he signed.

Dunno what his contract looks like but I could see him extending again. He loves the club, he knows his role and he seems to love us as much as we love him.

Add to that he's a constant source of good news around the club

Love Luke me 😎

He was trying to pass to Diarra or Rigg under pressure on his weaker foot with Barnes a few yards away from him in the first ten minutes of a derby with them man for man on every player under instruction. You can even see Xhaka tell Ellborg to play it to O'Nien.

A complete nonsense idea.

Me too 🩷

I think this is where we should remember that Le Bris has a PhD in sports psycology. O'Nien has some excellent attributes. If anyone embodies the whole 'till the end attitude it's him. It is not a coincidence that we scored a winner in the 90th minute, if his, Xhaka's etc. attitudes are what we have built around over the last 5 years.

Would be ideal if certain people stopped throwing tantrums like they’re 11 years old when he’s announced in the starting lineup anarl.

He made a mistake yesterday and we were all probably fuming when it happened, myself included. Picked himself up and was good for the rest of the game. He got man of the match in his last start.

He’s obviously not a starter but he steps up when he’s required. Been with us since that rotten spell in league one and he’s a club legend.

Even though I hate the use of the word, there isn't another player in the modern history of the club who has been on a greater "journey" with us.

Bally
Benno
Luke

I don't think even SKP gets into that group.

I get everyone is on a buzz and everything is great with the world right now but it never ceases to amaze me that the Onien cultists will not accept he's a massive liability and not good enough for this level.

Once again he's at fault for a goal. He's barely played this season and he's managed to get sent off, is at clear fault for 2 goals, and nearly scored an insane own goal last week.

It's so clear to me now how people like trump get elected despite being incompetent, people are blinded by personality.
Are we allowed to say he’s good enough for 5th/6th choice CB at this level. When the 2 games he’s stated we’ve taken 6 points.

If Ballard, Aldrete, Murkiele and Geertruida (arguably Reinaldo as well) are all available to play at CB he doesn’t play. So he is 5th/6th choice to play there at best.

Who is a team without European football gonna get in to be fifth inline that is better

Great lad but i won’t let the result cloud my judgement. Gifted them a opening goal and nearly give them a second with a ridiculous pass to Xhaka but we got the win that’s all that matters but hopefully we shake hands in the summer and go our separate ways as we need better but there hasn’t been more likeable Sunderland players as him in my lifetime and that today was probably a perfect and fitting end for me.
I hope there’s a place for Luke in the coaching team

The same fans who used to bang on about how all they wanted from players was that they gave 100% for the shirt.

I absolutely love O’Nien. He’s a mentality monster.

Yea, the "all we ask for is that the players give everything" bullshit doesn't pass the stress test among most fans it seems.

Bloke is like 4th or 5th choice CB and 4th choice RB. We can't expect better in our first season back, and frankly I don't know how many players out there would have recovered from the mistake as well as he did.

Do we want him starting derbies? No, but he's a net positive to this club.
