Danny Dyer talks sense

Feeling part of a big tribal movement is something I feel very lucky about, connected to the place of my birth. But not everyone is so lucky. I obviously understand how it happens if people love football but don't have any strong association to a club in the vicinity, due to an accident of birth. Yes, there are clubs everywhere and even non-league football can provide the same feeling but then most of us probably have a small team closer to our house or place of birth than SAFC, but don't follow them.

But obviously, you can still choose the most local big team, if you don't want to follow a lower level of football, rather than just picking a successful one from somewhere else.

Aye, agree with him. My brother and father in law support Arsenal but are from Durham, they'll never feel the anxiety or emotion involved when they play Spurs or the full exhilaration when they inevitably win the league this season.

I'm sure they'll enjoy those things but it's not like they interact with their rivals on a daily basis or have that sense of belonging when at the Emirates.
Support? How many games do they do?

Absolutely spot on this, few of my mates from the north east and are either Liverpool, Manchester United fans I don’t get it

Spot on. I never give any of them the satisfaction of asking 'who have you got theirs weekend ' etc. I couldn't care less. It's even worse now we are playing these teams again. I know a few who support villa for some reason, that isn't as bad I suppose as it's not for the glory at least, they aren't old enough to be around when they win stuff

He’s spot on. Durham mags living by the river Wear supporting the mags and slagging Sunderland off

Haven’t got a clue. And it means now. I may as well say I support Barcelona and my team walloped them 7-2. It just doesn’t work.

Well I did support Barcelona on Wednesday and we walloped the Mags 7-2, it worked for me.

I am back to supporting Sunderland now and especially tomorrow.

You could have someone 150 miles away who for whatever reason has followed the club since they were a toddler and they'll be living and breathing everything about the club and the players and the history.

Life and society has moved on from being born in a village and never leaving. People/families move all around the country for education and jobs, part of that sort of globalisation is being able to get attached to things that they weren't born into
Those reasons are usually due to family influence? My siblings and our kids support SAFC but we were born in the midlands. Parents moved from County Durham in 1960s. Thousands of people moved to midlands coalfields. Other people will support a club because they win things?

2nd paragraph. People moved around more than you think for work. Hence SAFC fans in SE Northumberland when mining communities moved. Loads of MLFs with Scottish connections etc. Tin miners moved from Cornwall to NE.

Think it's more a thing from people growing up on they Premier a League era due to the influx of media and TV showcasing it. Easy to support a team miles away from your front room but you'll never get the highs that you do supporting your local team (or lows as well tbf 🤣).

I honestly dont ever remember "choosing" to support Everton I literally went the games with my grandad at a young age. His brother (my uncle) was a red and used to try take me the pit with my cousin (red) but my grandad would never allow it.

My kids pretty much were brainwashed into supporting Everton by my mum who's a big bluenose.

Weird people "choosing" to support a certain team. Never used to see many Man City tops about but go any town/area in and around Manchester / Merseyside and you see loads of young kids wearing them.

Sad to see tbh.

Nearest football league to where you were born , that’s your club .Knew a lad from Macclesfield who claimed he was Man Utd fan through and through .
